There has to be comprimise somewhere if the war is to end. Both Ukraine and Russia will need to give something - whether it's land, repatriation, remuneration? No idea, but then I'm not a diplomat bartering for a peace. I thought Stans idea of UN monitored elections in both Crimea and Donbas would be a start, but I also understand that both parties would be reluctant for this at this stage. However, continually pumping $billions worth of arms into the country isn't going to bring either of them to the table any time soon.

But what it will bring is profit for the arms industry and companies involved in rebuilding nations in the aftermath…..it worked for them in Iraq and Afghanistan, so why change a successful formula now.

You're right, these disputes that have a complicated history can last for years. Look at Northern Ireland. That had to burn itself out before peace was possible. I suspect Ukraine/Russia will be the same. As to arms, Ukraine should be given the means to defend itself by the West. Russia will be hoping that in time, there will be a loss of interest by Western nations. We'll see.

As a conservative Christian wouldn’t Mr Hitchens welcome Armageddon? After all it’s the inevitable end stage of his world view/ideology.

Rest of the article, beyond the usual attempts at self justification (a family trait) makes sense. Time to seriously try to stop this war. Russia is not going to be ‘defeated’ in any conventional sense, it never has been. UN mandated and organised votes in Crimea and Donbas to see which country they really want to be part of, and guaranteed safe free passage to those who wish to leave these areas because they don’t like the result. New international Marshall Plan to support reconstruction. Pause on expansion of NATO and EU eastwards. Incentives to Russia to open up through relaxation of sanctions. Everything on the table. Hopefully Putin croaks soon.

I’m sure that the vast majority of Ukrainians, and Russians if they are allowed to be propaganda free, just want to be left alone to get on with improving their lives and communities without being bombed on a regular basis or seeing their sons, brothers, husbands called up to be shot at. The propaganda we are subjected to in the west really doesn’t encourage a balanced peace focussed international effort.

They can't have a referendum in the Donbas, the Russians have reduced most of it to rubble/raped/murdered/forced out most of the civilians. If the result didn't go their way they'd just be back again once they regrouped.

Finland kicked their arses and they never dared go back, same with Afghanistan. Ukraine needs to kick them out and join NATO, it's the only way they'll be guaranteed peace.

The Russians have cleared out the Tatars that lived in Crimea, it's been colonised since then. A referendum would be meaningless.

Watford. Why?
It’s just nice to know where our visitors are from. Used to be a lot of interplay between different clubs on here, much less nowadays. Do you know Cologne Hornet? He takes a slightly different perspective to you on this subject.

I was just throwing out ideas, I have no expertise. I’m sure professional diplomats are ruling all sorts of stuff out all the time. Shame, getting the killing stopped as soon as possible would be nice.

I've been reading this forum for ages, I like to read politics threads, this one is probably the best on not606.

I'd love the war to stop tomorrow, unfortunately as the past shows Russia won't stop until they're properly defeated. The numbers may seem high, but the West has barely given Ukraine anything. If we supplied them at the start with the same quantities of equipment Russia received during WW2 the war would have been over last year. So far they've just been getting old stocks, things are slowly improving but the frontline is massive.

not606 is slowly dying, I sort of know why but he'll just ban me if I mention it <laugh>

Both our seasons seem to be a bit of a nightmare. Started well and fell apart. I doubt we'll even stay in the playoffs, constant injuries, bad luck and we're in need of a clearout. You guys were doing pretty well, what happened?

Not the thread for it (we have quite a few focussed on our collapse, including every match day thread) but, briefly, shafted by a manager bailing on us only a few months in, new bloke seems like an empty space, squad full of jellyfish. Meh.

Britain is being deprived of some of its greatest minds because of the paltry amount we pay MPs.
For example, a potential Prime Minister, Jared O'Mara, was forced to commit fraud to afford his cocaine, is this really the kind of position we want to put our MPs in?

Straight-talking and definitely not given a role infinitely above his ability to appeal to the remaining gullible right wing morons Lee Anderson update.

Ever thought he may be able to justify it, O Wise One?

PS Proud of Jared O'Mara?

Jared O’Mara is a pretty tiny fish in the grand scheme of things, a short-lived MP over three years ago, but he’s rightly paid for what he’s done. Four years seems like a lot though in the context of what politicians continue to get away with.

Whereas Lee Anderson has been propelled into a high profile position specifically to appeal to the permanent victims that are people like you. The bloke embarrasses himself and his Party on an almost daily basis.
