Another season not utilising that loan market very well. Patino for Blackpool would be a great partner for Seri we don’t seem to be very good at identifying premier league youngsters ready to make an impact at this level.

If Vale is on 25k+ a week there's just three words for that, 'see you, NEXT.'

It’s a real shame we didn’t go for Yoksulu who’s now at West Brom too. Would’ve fit in perfectly with the owners plans at the time whilst also being ready to contribute massively. On current form he’s probably the best defensive midfielder in the league and is exactly what we needed at the time and now

Maybe it's not true. I for one find it very hard to believe.

That's almost certainly going to happen in a few days time.

If we're paying all of Vale's 25k+ a week then that's more an indictment on the ownership than anything else I've seen from them so far. That's appalling mismanagement.

And people wonder why Honeyman's nose was put out of joint when we offered him 10k a week to stay..

Not for much longer thank ****. Ebiowei is on probably a 1/5 of that at Palace and he’s actually capable at this level

It just staggers me that we didn't expect Chelsea to pay a penny of his wage. That's basic negotiation.

Chelsea are very strict when it comes to loaning out their highly rated young players. You either take it or leave it. In hindsight, we should have definitely left it

It’s ridiculous. Who the **** pays 100% of a loanee’s wages when there isn’t even an option to buy? Most Prem clubs are even happy to pay the lion’s share of their young player’s wages when they go out on loan as they can afford it and the experience at Championship/League 1 is the most important thing. Chelsea must be laughing their bollocks off at us.

That seems pretty surprising since I know when they've loaned out even senior players like Drinkwater and Barkley they've payed a huge chunk of their wage just to get them off their books. In order to incentivise lower league clubs to sign Vale they should have been offering to pay at least if not more than half, even if they had plenty of interest in him. The fact that we just happily accepted paying all of it is pretty dismal negotiation. As Kalman said, especially with no option to buy.

Don’t be too hard on the management. Everything looks easy in hindsight. Wilson was a game changer and if Vale turned out like him 25k a week is cheap. He’s been a disaster, yes, but we’ve had plenty of loans from Prem sides we paid a fair penny for and turned out decent.

He was signed based on his reputation within the ranks though, there was probably a queue of clubs who’d have signed him. And because we were desperate on deadline day we moved to the front by paying majority of his large wages which not many others would’ve

Even if he had been as good as Wilson I would have been appalled to be paying him 25k. He's an unproven kid in the Championship for the first time. No one justifies that wage. As alluded to, the fact management wasn't offering close to that for Honeyman says it all.

Howden is suggesting this is standard for Chelsea though which would mean anyone else 'in the queue' was also willing to pay all of his wage, so no I'm still not understanding how this happened.

Anyway, it's done, management learns from it and hopefully doesn't **** up that bad again.

I’d be sending all the Chelsea loaners back out of principle. £25k a week, he’s done absolutely nothing to warrant that kind of wage.

We used to be, right up to the point where Ehab sacked Mike Phelan. Stan Ternent was already knobbed off that Bruce had gone, apparently that pushed him over the edge. The recruitment since then has been pretty ****, if I'm totally honest.

Lee Darnbrough brought in Stuart White as the Chief Scout, who up until that point was the chief scout at Wigan (who had just gone down to League One). I mean, look at the players we've brought in since Stan left:

    17-18 (18th)

    Fraizer Campbell
    Kevin Stewart
    Ondrej Mazuch
    Stephen Kingsley
    Seb Larsson
    Jon Toral
    Nouha Dicko
    Jackson Irvine
    Angus McDonald
    Eric Lichaj
    Ola Aina
    Michael Hector
    Fikayo Tomori
    Harry Wilson

    18-19 (13th)

    David Milinkovic
    Reece Burke
    Jordy De WIjs
    George Long
    Liam Ridgewell
    Todd Kane
    Tommy Elphick
    Chris Martin
    Marc Pugh

    19-20 (24th - R)

    Matt Ingram
    Tom Eaves
    Danny Lupano
    Ryan Tafazolli
    Sean McLoughlin
    George Honeyman
    Callum Elder
    Leo Lopes
    Josh Magennis
    Callum Jones
    Norbert Balogh
    Elliot Bonds
    Martin Samuelsen
    James Scott
    Mallik Wilks
    Festus Arthur
    Josh Bowler
    Matthew Pennington
    Herbie Kane
    Marcus Maddison

    20-21 (1st in League 1 (P))

    Lewie Coyle
    Josh Emmanuel
    Richie Smallwood
    Greg Docherty
    Alfie Jones
    Thomas Mayer
    Jordan Flores
    Max Clark
    Hakeeb Adelakun
    Regan Slater
    Gavin Whyte
    Dan Crowley

    21-22 (19th)

    Andy Cannon
    George Moncur
    Randell Williams
    Tom Huddlestone
    Tyler Smith
    Regan Slater (permanent)
    Ryan Longman
    Nathan Baxter
    Di'Shon Bernard
    Matt Smith
    Allahyar Sayyadmanesh
    Marcus Forss
    Liam Walsh

This season isn't over so I won't put up the lads from this season, but picking through that lot, how many would you say (out of however many that is) you saw and thought "wow, what a player we've got here). Wilson? Irvine? Honeyman? Doc? Slater maybe? Allahyar? There's a hell of a lot of dross there and most of them are bang average at best. I liked Lichaj and Larsson, but they were hardly stand outs for us. The players signed in League One were much better given our division, but it's quite easy to see why we've been so mediocre the past few seasons and why we haven't kicked on, our recruitment has been nothing short of ****.

That's the difference, they wanted those player and their wages off the book and out the club at that point in time. They have run their academy very differently over recent years. Some agree with it, some don't... But that's the way it is ATM with them. Vale especially is extremely highly rated and I was genuinely surprised and excited to see him come to us. Has a 3yr deal on 26k a week gone to his head and he's stop putting the effort in.... Who knows. It's best for all parties that they all go back imo, including Baxter ( although it's not been decided fully on him as far as I know )
