German football federation to take legal action over Fifa’s OneLove armband ban. https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2...gal-action-fifa-onelove-armband-ban-world-cup
Gerrin, about time someone grew a pair of balls... annoyed it wasn't us... Germany’s football federation has said it plans legal steps against Fifa over its banning of OneLove rainbow armbands at the World Cup as it faced the humiliating decision by one of the country’s largest supermarket chains to cut its commercial ties over the row. The DFB refused to let players in Qatar wear the armbands promoting diversity and inclusion after threats from the world football governing body to issue yellow cards to team captains, but faced a swift reaction, including from the supermarket chain REWE, which became the first sponsor to take direct action as it said it would drop its advertising campaign in protest at the decision.
I've often thought the major European nations should break away from FIFA, i'm sure the major South American nations would soon join. FIFA are not fit for purpose. Infantino is every bit as corrupt as Blatter ever was. Football needs and deserves and huge shake up, been a long time coming.
I have no doubt they will. I always believed there decision to threaten yellow cards would provoke a backlash, but thought it would be after the world cup. Germany being first is more powerful as well, FIFA will be much more wary of them being able to lead a collaborative revolt.
The various broadcasting corporations have took money hand over fist from many states for advertising over the years yet think it is acceptable to bite the hand that feeds them due to various political beliefs. Its quite simple, dont take the dosh then people will take you seriously when it comes to preaching from your pedestal. You cant be sat at the same table with these states / countries when the money is being discussed then choose to leave the table because you dont like to hear how they earned it! If somebody is welcomed into my home and disrespects my wishes they are promptly shown the door.
Good point about Germany, hope we are swift in backing them up (I.e next), but I cannot see it... we'll just sit on our hands and wait and see.
Looks like Lineker is starting to see the light, if not a tad late... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-63720785
I think we will be involved mate. I think we are pretty progressive in these things, and a bit of a leader. But it cant be something done in isolation. We need to be part of a community pushing this. We run the risk of being seen as a rabble rouser. There are dissenting voices building. Denmark were pretty strong on it yesterday. Vertonghen said some quite striking things too. I had thought they would wait for the world cup to pass, but I get the sense there is a lot of anger building towards FIFA. I have been very angry about the way our media have reacted towards the team, southgate and the FA. They have peddled a narrative that is based on falsehoods and used the so called climb down at the last minute as a means to shame them. I would like to see some legal action against some of the reporters, but not sure you can sue somebody for being stupid.
Agree, just watching itv coverage of the Germany game and Keane saying it's not going away, not an easy fix... fifa have caused this, but it's too late to sue? Wright saying wear the band, such a powerful protest.
FIFA have behaved scandalously. Agree suing may not br easy, but it would hopefully cause some major hassle for FIFA and if nothing else keep them wriggling on an unpleasant hook for a while, looking like the shameless organisation they are. I am not sure wearing the band is right anymore, personally. Imagine if Gareth Bale did it first game and gets booked. The ref then gave him a yellow, incorrectly in my opinion, in the first half. He is off and doesnt win or take the penalty. I dont know if that outcome would be reasonable.
This could be the beginning of the end of Qatari investment in football in any way and result in PSG being sold. As has been said multiple times, the issues and continuation of everything being highlighted isn't going away, proving Qatar's efforts at sports washing have massively backfired. We can only hope if that happens, then the Mugs up the road end up the same way as well, however they will forever be tarnished for actually wanting and begging for the Saudi's to buy them!
It would be great to see the end of sportswashing, noticed Lineker said he felt uncomfortable with the sportswashing going on in Russia in 2018. About time we stood up to these abhorrent regimes.
Took until the 23 minute for Matterface to mention the German stance against FIFA... I cannot stand his commentary and feel he's tried to hide it away Edit, give Matterface credit, he mentioned it again on 30 minutes that the German's put their hands over their mouths in the line-up to stress they've been silenced.
Travelling to work so just seen this pop up on my Sky News feed on my phone. Fair play to the Germans, they definitely aren't taking this lying down and I fully expect a few more teams to follow suit now. This really isn't going to end well for Qatar, even if FIFA and the State backed down on things now. It's just too late.
I'd added an edit, give Matterface credit, he mentioned it again on 30 minutes that the German's put their hands over their mouths in the line-up to stress they've been silenced. I've read Germany plan on wearing the OneLove armband on Sunday game v Spain as it was too soon to make their stance v Japan.
Depends on a CAS ruling I think. There is a CAS committee at the world cup who will make decisions in 48 hours.
