Nice has Barkley, Nicolas Pepe, Aaron Ramsey, Kasper Schmeichel...and Mario Lemina. A real Island of Misfit Toys thing going on there currently.
I see them appearing on a list of "Fun FM23 starts".

They have big money behind them and are in a very appealing location (that is more of a real world thing than a game one)

Reactions: Le Tissier's Laces
Yeah, teams could put up with his attitude when he was good. Now he's ****, no. Certainly don't want that lunatic anywhere near Saints.
Lunatic is fine for a goalkeeper. Not for anywhere else where they can get in more trouble and get themselves sent off. Especially for smaller clubs where you don’t get as much grace from the referees

i dunno, Osvaldo was fun. Watching your own players stick the nut on each other makes for some spicy forum discussions at least <laugh>

But now we've got a young squad. Costa should be the last player we should be signing. The more experienced squad members need to be players that the likes of Edozie, Lavia etc look up to.
Osvaldo was fun while it lasted but at least he was in his prime unlike Costa now. The last thing we want is to stop becoming an attractive club for these young talents.

Yeah that’s fair enough

I wonder if this prompts our scouts to go back and look for others in that area. Because if an even bigger bid comes in next summer we will probably accept before being bounced I to accepting 40m the summer after - assuming that is how the clause works (I expect it doesn’t activate until summer 2024 and City wouldn’t have expected anyone to bid drastically more than 40m prior to that)

Remember Liverpool will be desperate in that position next summer as well. They might pass straight over Bellingham. Or Chelsea might go for him next summer since he was completely unavailable this summer

I did see a journalist (or maybe an ex player) suggesting that Chelsea would t go back in for the ajax midfielder they failed bidding for on deadline day because the Chelsea owner was out of him mind

We could be looking at huge bids for stand out performers a season earlier than we would usually exp expect. At least the Fofana fee sets some kind of precedent. Because he was worth that after only one season of football

A potential issue with selling him next summer before the buy back clause kicks in is it might **** us longer term with getting players with buy backs if teams feel we will sell after one year.

You’d hope that if Lavia continues to impress and improve and Chelsea bid like £60m for him in the summer that City would understand us having to accept, but they might not and tell us where to go if we try the same again next summer when signing their young players.

I wonder how many more City youngsters are going to be in the queue. How many times are we going to go back there. I’m sure there are some for next summer but going much beyond that it seems like the distance between how closely Shields knows them and can tempt them will get greater

I guess I’m saying that I don’t see it being a never ending conveyor belt from the Man City academy. But perhaps it might be. Maybe future deals would contain different buy back clauses that can be activated earlier if we get a sizeable bid early. But maybe not because it could still be the case that Man City still don’t consider him ready

I don’t think Shields is the only factor for the players wanting to come. He will obviously have insight into which players are most ready for PL football having worked closely with them, but that will change in a year or 2 with him not being involved with City.

If we can get a couple of the young players we’ve signed moves to big teams in a year or 2 then that will be far more attractive to a young player than if some behind the scenes guy is there or not Id suggest. He’s not a coach so beyond recruiting them to the academy in the first place I’m not sure how much involvement he had day to day.
