I think the point about fans wanting Defoe is sort of why I have a lingering doubt. Johnson clearly didnt want him, I was certainly bang against it and others were too. He hadnt played any serious football in 2 years and in reality was never going to be able to. It is the job of those in charge to make informed and rational decisions. Then to walk away like he did was an insult. Maybe Speakman was under pressure to do the deal from above? But to me it was very naieve and I hope people have learned from it.
We have no idea who wanted Defoe, there were also rumours that Speakman didn't want him. They seem to keep transfers very quiet until they are done or nearly done, which shows they go about it the right way. Would rather wait till end of window for transfers if it means getting the right players in

I admit to still have lingering doubts about him mate. All related to Keane and Defoe. Somebody had stars in their eyes for a few weeks for sure. In my opinion neither should have been given any consideration at all. Everything else since he bas been here - spot on. I just have a worry about him being prone to a bit of silly season.

You don't think Keane should have been given ANY consideration to take over a faltering league 1 side? I don't get that, tbh. He did a great job at Sunderland. I really like AN, hope he continues doing the solid job he's done so far and is here for ages, but the second the job is up for grabs I'll be banging the Keane drum. There is a great manager in there, would love to have him back.

No I dont. The fact he has been out of the game so long means I wouldnt have considered him for more than 5 mins. It was a sentimental thing only and nothing else. There is nothing to suggest Keane can be a success at all IMO. All about opinions, but I called some grief on here for saying he was a horrible choice, and I still stand by that. Absolutely zero positives IMO.

If Speakman didnt want him it makes me even less impressed to be honest. Imagine if it were KLD amd Speakman just went along with it - would mean we had quite a weak DOF.

Like I have said Speakman has done 90% of a great job, and that means I am hally enough. Just have a couple of lingering doubts because somebody's eyes widened at so called box office people like Defoe and Keane, even though both were the worst possible fit. I woule hate to think if AN were to quit, for example, we would go down the Big Sam route because it had some glamour - these people are a part of our history and have nothing to offer now.

Nathan Patterson is available for loan from Everton. That’s the ticket. If we don’t go all out to make that happen there’s something wrong. Gooch couldn’t kick my arse and clearly Hume isn’t going to be first choice.
I think we are overloaded in the RB department with Hume, Huggins, Winchester & Gooch (although I'm not a fan of Gooch playing there). We definitely need a left back to challenge Cirkin, although the current recruitment at the club seems to be swaying towards having a small squad with a number of versatile players who can cover a number of positions. Not sure I'm a fan of that approach

There’s been plenty said about Alese being able to play at LB. I can’t see us signing a full back, hope I’m wrong…

Huggins wont play much and Winchester will get sold. If we sign a rb like patterson on loan then hume will go out on loan.

Patterson 100% improves us so its a no brainer to enquire about him if he is available

I think we have more important areas of the pitch to focus on. Once Huggins is fit, I expect him to be 1st choice

I agree there are other areas that are more important but if a player is available that improves us we should go for it. Hard to tell with huggins as he has never played senior football and has been out for ages with a really serious injury - its a huge ask for him to then be our 1st choice rb at championship level

Yeah, fair comment

I’m surprised he played 80 minutes for them today if they’re prepared to let him leave on loan.

I thought Winchester played okay at RB last season... and scored a couple of goals

Probably a heap of dog **** but nonetheless

Unlikely and probably one of those odd SAFC/Cov things that happen recently. We’ve been linked with O’Hare, Gyrokere and Hamer now who happen to be their best three players. He’d be a good signing if there was any truth in it.

If there was a great manager in there, he would be managing now, not being a pundit
