From memory, Derby also won the toss and choose to bowl when we battered them in the QFs. They clearly haven't learnt their lesson.

I get the advantage of knowing what you need to score by batting second, but it takes away the opportunity for the opposition batters to face scoreboard pressure in a run chase. OK, 265 is a stupidly high score, but Somerset were always capable of getting something massive. So their only tiny, tiny chance was to bat first, hope to post something decent (eg 200) and then hope the pressure of the chase got to Somerset. By putting Somerset in, Derby just gave them license to cash into a shockingly poor bowling attack.

The world record is safe though (and it's one of those records which you struggle to ever see get beaten). 257 run victory.

We've been the 2nd SF six times before. Only once have we won that 2nd SF...it was in 2012 when we beat Somerset...and then followed it by beating Yorkshire in the final.

10 years later...

Out of curiosity, I looked up the record total for the John Player League, which as it happens was set by Leicester against Somerset, at Frome in June 1970.

Leicestershire scored 262-6 in their 40 overs.

Somerset just beat that in 20!

How the game has moved on in 50-odd years…
