I don't understand it, I really don't. I coach young kids and know when someone shouldn't be in midfield or is a liability up top, I refuse to believe it's any different at elite level. I also understand that primarily a game is won or lost from the middle of the park. We have a team that has, for the past two years, played its' best football and got best results with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 model. We have really good options from LW and RW and a decent CF.
That happened today was Max was a LM. It's a different discipline, not helped by having the league's weakest LB behind him. Joelinton playing with Wilson up top for the first time ever was a random choice. Fraser on RM was anonymous, Krafth at RB was hopeless. The CB's weren't our weakest link today, there was a constant problem with both full backs and a gap between MF and CB, with nobody able to take the game forward until Almiron came on.
For me, we need to play 4-2-3-1 against stronger sides, and like it or not will have to pick Hayden in matches to protect the defense. We can go 4-3-3 against those on a par with us and play a DM, we then go 4-3-3 with a playmaker instead of Hayden against the weaker sides. In every formation, we play the same front three, and we pick a solid back four of Manq, Fede/Lascelles, Schar and Lewis. Hell, even pick the u-23 kid at LB but for ****s sake drop Ritchie, he cost us a goal yet again today.
Some say today was 3-4-3, but I'm afraid 90% of the time it was a Howe staple of 4-4-2 with Shelvey/Willock over-run in the middle - something (2 midfielders often against 3) that has been an issue since forever. I cannot fathom how successive managers fail to get to grips with this basic premise?
I'm sick of saying it, I'm sick of seeing 2 weak as piss players in CM, I'm sick of seeing the repeated selection of **** non-full backs. Just pick the right ****ing players to fit the squad, then when Jan comes get the players to fit a different style and formation.
On a football pitch acceleration is more important than top speed due to the limited space. No ****ing way is Jamal Lascelles considered rapid. I'd back Derek Wright in a race over him.

Gerrard wins 2/2.
Howe wins 0/2.
Sigh!
I would like to see us go get Trippier and lets say Umtitti in the Jan window. Then try a line up of
Dubravka in goal
Lewis LWB
Trippier RWB
Umtiti CB
Schar CB
ASM MEZ (needs re-trained)
Willock BBM
Almiron MEZ (needs re-trained)
Joelinton PF
Gayle AF
Wilson PF

Joelinton will destroy Norwich and max will torture Burnley.
It'll be fine it was simply the fact arsenal are a good side and far better than ours in all areas.
No formation change could remedy the real issue
It's a personnel change that's needed. Lascelles and Ritchie out is a god send, i just pray Hayden doesn’t play
What the ****ity ****?!
We’ve got no time to “retrain” anyone and I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this, but Dwight Gayle is considerably ****ter than anyone else in the squad, by a country mile.
Just play 4 defenders that aren’t terrible in Manq, Fede, Schar and Lewis.
Then play the best 3 midfielders for the opposition, with Shelvey or Hayden central, Almiron left of the three and Willock on the right of then.
Then play three forwards in position, ASM, Wilson and Joe left to right.
You then have back four, protection, link, ball carriers and attacking threat. What on ****ing earth is so difficult for every manager that none of them can work this out?
As if Gerrard would be 2/2 if he’d been appointed instead of Howe.Gerrard wins 2/2.
Howe wins 0/2.
Sigh!

I see a small problem or 2 with your not so cunning plan.......
You say we can't re-train anyone, but Miggy aint a cm.
By the sounds of your formation I am assuming it would be played with a narrow 3 in midfield. This would require both Lewis and Manq to play as attacking wing backs. Neither of whom are comfortable in the role and neither of whom can cross a ball on anything resembling a consistant basis.
I am also assuming you would be looking at Joe and ASM playing out wide and neither of them can cross and in Maxi's case won't pass. Which then leaves us with a lonesome Wilson up top against a minimum of 2 cb's
Nobody should be crossing from a byline. None of the big sides do and seem to score at will. Run at goal, give and go, at pace. Almiron is best as a 10, play him there in a 4231, he works back to support the two deeper midfielders which gives us three in the middle. Or play Shelvey Hayden and Willock for all I care, just get bodies there and make sure they support wider areas where appropriate. Full backs don’t need to get any further forward then 30 yards from the opponents goal, whipped from deep works great if you have bodies attacking the centre. Besides which they need to get it forward, as in pass, and quickly.
The ****ing dilly-dallying in defence has to stop. What Krafth/Lascelles were doing repeatedly playing stupid passes was incomprehensible.
Has anyone noticed how **** Wilsons been for a while now?
