Unai Emery will turn down the chance to become manager of Newcastle United and will instead stay with Villarreal, reports Guillem Balague.

The ex-Arsenal boss confirmed on Tuesday he had been approached by the Premier League club, who made him their first choice to replace Steve Bruce.

Sources close to Emery indicate he felt the new Magpies ownership lacked a clear vision for the club.

Newcastle had hoped to have the Spaniard in place by the weekend.

But Spanish football expert Balague says those advising Emery were left feeling uncertain about the club's strategy, with stories in England emerging that the shortlist was down to him and ex-Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe - two men with contrasting approaches and vastly different levels of experience within European football.

"Emery felt a huge pressure on the day of their match [a 2-0 win over Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday]," said Balague.

"And then there was the lack of a clear vision from the club. If you want him, do you approach him in such a rushed way, without an official offer and with it coming out from the English side that it is all practically done?

"I don't see this move happening now this season. Maybe next year when the club's structure is clearer and the vision more defined."

Emery, 50, was really interested in taking charge of Newcastle following the Saudi Arabia-backed £305m takeover which has made them one of the richest clubs in world football.

Lack of vision <laugh> they're the richest club in the world <laugh>

That would make him the 5th manager to turn them down (allegedly)

I get his point of view, if he and Howe are the top two contenders it shows the club has no idea what it wants to do.

Looking favourite as his buddy Gramae Jones is already there. I can't believe they haven't sought to entice Ron Atkinson out of retirement.

It’ll take time but they appear to have the money and the will so it has a good chance of been a successful project

Villarreal manager Unai Emery, 50, turned down a move to Newcastle because the club wanted a clause in his contract which would allow them to sack him if the Magpies are relegated at the end of the season.

As it looks Howe is going to get the job. I think it will be very interesting to see how he gets on. English managers don't often get the chance to manage a club that will have money to spend, so I hope he makes a success of it.

Considering he spent what was it, 40m on Jordan Ibe and Dom Solanke, plus more on guys like Brad Smith from Liverpool, I'm shocked they're happy to bring him in.

I must say at the time I thought also they were 2 good buys, but it just goes to show buying young players that have done well in EPL academy football don't always develop to be good EPL players. There is a lot to be said for the way Jarrod Bowen did it, starting at a lower league club and developing that way.

They were fine buys but the prices were crazy for players that really hadn't done much at PL level (granted Ibe had done more than Solanke).

They'll ultimately want a big name manager/coach at some point, without that they won't attract the best players they supposedly want.

If Howe can establish them as a decent mid table team over the next 2.5 years, he'll have laid the foundation for a 'bigger name' to come in then. I could be completely wrong!

That could well be the strategy, Rome wasn't built in a day, get the foundations built first then see where that takes you.

You're probably right, I'm just not sure they'll give him 2.5 years. This season and next would be my guess.

So basically do what Steve Bruce did over the last few seasons?
