The quality of recruitment under Bruce was light years ahead of what we got under Phelan and Silva. Managing the outgoings was better under Bruce as well. I seem to remember we got nearly £5m for Tom Ince, who Bruce signed on a Bosman with compensation. Net profit. James Chester sold for £8m. Huge net profit. Robby Brady sold for £7m. Net profit.

He signed Sam Clucas for £1.3m and the club made a huge profit from that. Bruce signed Shane Long for about £7m and sold him for £12m and used the money to get Hernández.

Any talk of Bruce being a reckless and extravagant spender in either the Championship or PL is utter bollocks and flies in the face of reality. We signed dross for more money under Phelan and Silva.

We made 20m that summer but we'd still spent a lot more. It was from then on that spending was curbed, infamously with Andre Gray unfortunately.

And look at who he bought. bruce sold players after relegation and released players too. And we stilll had one of the snallest budgets in the pl so it was hardly extravagant spending. So he must have agreed with the constraints and he then got promoted again.

The class players we did sign signed for Steve Bruce not Hull city. And I’m pretty sure Steve Bruce wouldn’t be doing all the finer points on contracts. Ehab wasted a lot of money in a panic pre season and then wasted further on those loans in January ndoye markovich etc
The day Steve Bruce was forced out of this club was a disaster and it’s been a downward spiral ever since and anyone who can’t see that is an idiot or Charon and Bob.

What you say is true. hes our greatest ever manager, but i criticised him after the home game with derby in the play offs. Those games have so much riding on them,i think the result is all that matters,so i was very naive. Now I'd have brucie back in a heartbeat, but I'd still moan about the team/tactics

My point was Bruce spent and sold wisely and left the financial situation in a better state than his successors did. Panic-buying Ryan Mason for a club-record fee came after Bruce, and a lot of the weird loan signings from Europe under Silva just looked like a frantic attempt to cobble a squad together to try and stay up, and it didn’t work.

Our transfer policy went to **** after Bruce left. Everything became last minute and rushed with no real planning to it. A million a piece for Weir and Keane? I’d be disappointed with those signings in the Championship, let alone the Prem.

The same figure is in the accounts of Hull City AFC as a debtor and SMC as a creditor so I'm 99% certain it's owed to Hull City AFC. Initially I'd say the loans were a way of keeping the rent low and the profits of the SMC non-existent. They wouldn't have liked paying a share of the profits to Hull City Council would they.

Its a while since I looked but I'm pretty certain the Allamhouse loans were just to Hull City AFC.

Yeah don't disagree at all, just can understand wanting to pull back after a big spending season that saw us relegated. My memory could be wrong but I thought there was a pretty clear vibe even from Assem that relegation after that season was a bit of a rude awakening. I remember during that season them bragging about how every season under then had progressively seen improvement so the relegation would have been pretty galling. Not justifying their actions but I suppose I can see what motivated them to do it. As you said, the bigger picture was those signings were all calculated and value-adding.

Add to the fact brucey with a settled squad and a few sensible additions and we would easily have stayed up! Boro and Sunderland imploded that season.
A further year in the pl with robbo and maguire staying as they would if brucey was there we would got the 70? Million for maguire and what 60? For robbo !!

To make money through players, you have to invest in them.

If the Allams had been the smart business people they profess to be they’d have realised they had a squad worth more than they’d spent on it and used that to their advantage.

Ironically that’s what they’ve been trying to do since, but we were already doing it at a higher level then.

Ironically that’s what they’ve been trying to do since, but we were already doing it at a higher level then.

I expanded on my point in a subsequent post. My point was when we went down we had spent a lot of money with only Long going for serious coin (and this was promptly reinvested). Yes in the long-term Bruce's incomings resulted in a net profit, but at that time those sales hadn't yet occurred..

Indeed, towards the end of the window unless I'm mistaken. Think we held out on selling them for a while. All I was saying is I can understand why they pulled back, even if I didn't agree with it, and moving to a Director of Football model wasn't the worst idea in principle, but it came at a bad time and cost us Bruce ultimately.
