We have no fuel in this area, the army are being brought in and we're begging Romanians to bail us out ...
... things are much worse mate, and no sign of 'normality' tbh.
If it is right that there is no shortage of petrol/diesel in the country but a shortage of drivers to get it to the pumps.... then the panic buying has made the situation 10 times worse. Filling up as normal and even driving more sedately would mean no problems.
A couple of viewers last night were asking the BBC News editor, whether or not they were responsible for making a minor problem a whole lot worse by their news reports talking up the driver shortage and how some petrol stations were not receiving their resupply promptly enough!
Akin I guess to shouting 'fire' in a crowded arena...causing a stampede, with resulting crush injuries.
It seems some areas of the country are worse than others. The NE, whilst some supermarket petrol stations have 'closed' the other more usual places are okay... with no queues as such locally. That may be because the journeys are relatively short. I have a hybrid which only does up to 30 miles on a charge... I hardly have to use any petrol. Even if you have a petrol only car and you are only doing short journeys (using a light accelerator foot), a full tank will last for weeks i guess. If you are doing say a daily commute of 100miles per day you will need to fill up regularly.
I just can't agree that trying to ensure you have enough fuel for work, essential travel, school runs, etc, is panic buying tbh mate. We also have endless motorhomes passing through with people visiting and moving on to Devon, Somerset, etc. They may be on a fortnight's break, even in a rental. It's really quite sensible and logical to fill your vehicle up if you see that some local garages have no fuel because there aren't enough drivers. That's how this started and social media means people hear about it quickly.
And there's very little trust in the government at the moment. They said the situation wasn't serious and that they wouldn't bring in the army, now they are from Monday. So when they tell people just to buy fuel, as normal, few trust them and will fill up if they see available fuel.
I certainly will and I'm not in a panic or being selfish, I just don't want to end up stuck in a village with no shops and the nearest a 5 mile round trip.
It’s nice to have the freedom to make on the spot decisions of where to go and when ( eg go to shops after work instead of straight home) - but I wonder if a single person has thought to find someone to car share with for work , mums getting together to share school runs , knowing your neighbours go to the same supermarket etc - would surely help ( and save money)
