Doesn't help that he doesn't have a proven championship squad to pick from, unlike Ole at Man Utd having proven players at the level he's at - but I totally agree that Grants limitations in the championship are there for all to see.
Even without the abundance of quality required to really succeed in the division, he should be doing better than his last 30 Championship games indicates he is doing.

Your question starts from a blinded place. He’s a professional manager who has a range of players to choose from. I don’t think he has picked the same XI in consecutive games very often, certainly not in recent weeks. He changes things during matches, sometimes fairly subtle, sometimes - like last night - radically. Of course you don’t see or accept that because you’ve got drunk on making the same points and getting affirmation from a small group of blowhards online.

Which was my point if you read the context. What Grant did last season is nothing like Ole getting relegated and then winning the league below.
Still think he needs to win the next one to buy more time though, as his championship record is still worse than the albeit limited championship squads he's had at his disposal.
It will be interesting to see what McCann goes with formation wise Saturday. If he stays with 433, then I strongly feel he has been told the club philosophy is 433 and you were brought in the play that system, so that is how it will be. I hope that isn't the case, but you never know.
If he goes with 442 or 352 then will it be Eaves and Smith up front, or KPL/Eaves either way I would drop Wilks as he just is not performing at this moment?

A 4-3-3, like any formation is nominal.
It can be any formation you want it to be in any given scenario, just like any other nominal starting formation.
However, I'd like to think Eaves and Tyler have just about earned the right from the bench to both start centrally, and in close support. Whether thats playing Eaves in the 10 role behind Smith off the shoulder - as his best work last night came from behind the last defender - or you switch approach entirely.
I'd also bring Bernard back and stick Jones in the holding role.
Or you could go 3 5 2 and drop the wide boys and give elder and Emmanuel more freedom, but I think it'd be harsh in KLP to take him out. He's worked his ass off covering his fullback and still been consistent. More goals and assists than anyone else.

It appears to me the starting formation is certainly not nominal with this group or this coach, as players seem to take up their 'nominal' starting positions no matter what (except for the odd occasion when they chase back, KLP doing far more than Wilks but then again that is not difficult). Too little movement/flexibility is one of the problems. Lack of intelligence on the players part or too rigid from the coach? I don't really care which it is as the result is the same every game. Very little threat going forward, very few options for the back four when they have the ball. Boring, predictable and far too easy to defend.
Smith every time for me up front and then we just might have to play on the floor and through the middle rather than the obsession with get it wide, sling it in only for their defence to clear. Saturday is going to be a tough watch with 3500 Boro fans 'enjoying' the day out.

The only thing i'm interested in with McCant is the date he goes, not his formations, or his excuses. In fact (controversial) its a photo finish who I want gone first him or the Allams..

Maybe the entrenched moaning becoming a bad habit is simply a natural correlation with what's become a bad habit of McCann persisting with the same, resulting in continued failure at this level?
I've only just seen last night's results. Derby will soon overtake us, and even with a further 9 point deduction will overtake us in the new year if not before. Forest win, P'Boro pick up a point against the 'might' Bournemouth, and so it goes on. My fear, based on the evidence, is that we are going to be sunk without a trace before too long unless there's a change. And this great fighting spirit isn't going to last for ever. Definition of madness and all that.
Honeyman, if / when he finally returns & gets back up to speed might make a positive difference, but it's unrealistic that McCann, Ehab or us pin our hopes on the difference that he might make. Eaves has failed miserably previously on the many occasions he's been given the opportunity (which is why we were trying to offload), so thinking he might be some sort of returning messiah is plain crazy especially when the chances of McCann changing the set up are next to zero (were he to change approach, then who knows, but he won't).
Fair enough that McCann got another shot at it this season (although I would rather he'd gone previously), with the hope that he'd learnt something from last time around, but it's now crystal clear he hasn't.
We all know the root cause is with the owners, and that fans should back the team, and that it's not about chanting McCann Out during a game but rather it's a discussion on a message board plus voicing opinions in whatever way outside of the 90 minutes of a game, blah blah .... but I just can't see how anyone can continue to advocate keeping McCann and his failing coaching & tactics a moment longer.
