Never sit back and defend a 1-0, it’s asking for trouble.
Before the game started, I would have been happy with a draw, and so it turned out. A fair result IMO, and yes, disappointing to concede at the death, but all in all it's about qualifying, and not to lose is not a bad result.
Many of you have played this game, and when you are leading with ten minutes to go, you get into a mindset of holding on to what you have. Not many teams whilst leading 1-0 go on the offensive for the last 10 minutes, they see the game out. However, Southgate not making one or two substitutions is puzzling, as most managers would have brought on fresh legs and more defensive minded players to see the game through.
Aka Croatia World Cup semi and Italy euro final
Isn’t he the most successful manager since Alf Ramsey?More evdence, if required, that we'll win Jack £hit with Southgate. And wtf does Holland do? Doesn't he tell Southgate that we've got subs. He's a Yes man.
Obviously. Most countries didn't get that far in either competition.
Probably....Isn’t he the most successful manager since Alf Ramsey?
He's done brilliantly, I don't think anyone can seriously make any argument that he hasn't. He knows a damn sight more about tactics than I'll ever know, but a midfield of Mount rice and Phillips has no creativity. All very good players but trying to pass mount off as an attacking midfielder is bollocks. He spends most his time dropping into the space Luke Shaw wants to run into so he can clip little balls into the channel for the left winger. So not only is he not playing the short link up balls between the midfield and attack he also suppresses the attacking threat from Shaw. I'm not a fan of grelish or foden out wide. They should be where mount is supposed to be playing with one defensive midfielder behind them. If we come up against a top team then you play one of foden or grealish, one of rice or Phillips then one of bellingham or Henderson to control the ball and dictate the play. Our main formation and tactics are effectively 7 players to keep it solid and simple and three up top who we hope produce a bit of magic. It just doesn't seem very imaginative for a team so jam packed with talent.More evdence, if required, that we'll win Jack £hit with Southgate. And wtf does Holland do? Last night. Not bringing on subs to replace tired legs and bottle up midfield and defence with two banks of 5 with 10 mins to go, was IMHO a huge failure. Cost us the win. The Poles could still be playing now and not scored. Maybe I'm being over critical, but I can't see us winning a trophy with this guy. He's either too defensive or not enough. He's gone after Qatar. Whilst I don't disagree with the sentiment I think it's a bit over the top. He's improved year on year along with the team. For me he's just far too pragmatic and a bit slow to react to in game situations. There are without doubt far better coaches out there than him. But the team spirit he's fostered has been just as important to our massive improvement as the talent of the players. In an ideal world he would have a better back room team with a bit more tactical nous who would push him to make the seemingly obvious tweaks needed. That being said though we were only a shoot out away from being European champions so his approach nearly worked. In my opinion we showed Italy too much respect though, when in reality if you were to pick a starting 11 from both teams the majority would have been England players yet we played like underdogs.Last night. The best thing Southgate can do is show Kane his goal from last night. With a rollicking bollicking expletive laden "it is highly unlikely you will score a goal like that from the right back position, or any of the other walkabouts you go on". And that, walkabouts is it. He hasn't the pace to fanny about in midfield, and then make up the ground to where he should be.
How was Lewandowski, another greatest striker in the world contender, playing last night? Standing up front waiting for the ball to be played in front of him?The best thing Southgate can do is show Kane his goal from last night. People don't half write some weird stuff when it comes to England. Kane is one of the best strikers in the world and part of that is the dropping deep and linking that he's added to his game in the last few years. It's how he was top assister as well as top scorer in the PL last season. The goal that you mentioned was from dropping deep. Such a weird thing to decide to moan about now.

So the tweaks are seemingly obvious to messageboard users, but not to the highly qualified and experienced national team coaching staff, because they lack the necessary tactical nous.
Seems strange to me.
