How do buyback agreements usually work?

I know they used to be that if you sell the player that club (Spurs) would get first dibs as long as they matched whatever is being offered by other clubs. Is that still the case or would it be Spurs saying if we want to we can buy him back for, say £3m in the next three years?

I definitely agree with this. I think it's subconscious though.

It basically means if Spurs bid a certain amount for him we have to accept it.

Its essentially a minimum fee release clause but for just one club.

Aye - its a defence mechanism. assume everything is the worst and awful and it can never actually be worse than you thought.

    Miserable way to exist.

Yeah along those lines. Usually a 2-3 year time limit, and usually for a good fee.

It’s supposed we paying £1.3 up top, so likely a bit back in 2-3 years would be £6-8 million or so, with certain conditions.

Do you think we need another wide forward, a la Owen Dale?

I look at our options and an injury to McGeady would mean playing Diamond or Hawkes there. Whilst I like both I'm not sure they're ready to be regular starters in a team chasing promotion.

I guess the club would look at it as three positions behind the main striker and that we've got McGeady, Pritchard, Embleton, Gooch, Diamond, Hawkes and O'Brien as options. Therefore those sort of numbers don't really allow us to bring in another. I'm not convinced we've got enough there, particularly in terms of goals.

So if the £1.3m is accurate what sort of figure do you think Spurs would expect and what would we accept?

Its a tough one. the old sunderland would have got 2-3 back up players.

this new sunderland might trust that when McGeady is injured, Diamond, Hawkes or Benji should get game time.

We could go out and try to sign the likes of Dale or Kirk - but then when do Hawkes and Diamond get to play?

No idea mate - I'm not even sure the £1.3m is accurate. That was a different report from a random Portsmouth paper a few weeks ago - could be a completely different player.

I'd imagine the type of deal we / Spurs might accept is:

    • Up front fee - £1.3m
    • Buy back expiring after 3 years (end of initial contract) - £6m
    • Future sell on to other clubs - 40% of profit

I've wanted this new Sunderland for so long so I should pull myself together rather than now getting jittery that we are doing it.

It's seeing the options (embarrassment of riches) that Ipswich and Wednesday are going to have in those positions that is doing it. It's unfortunately probably the worst time, considering the strength of the league, for us to transition. It should have been done when we first dropped (not to mention the relative strength of our Academy options at that point). Guess I'll just need to hold my nerve.

I hate O Brien as the 10 mind. Add Ellis Taylor to your list I think. We definitely have enough numbers there. Whether we have quality in depth I’m not sure. Definitely we need another striker with goals in them - should be Grigg I know but we all know it’s isn’t. I think in that list we have players to create goals.
Priorities for me - Full backs and striker then swap Wright for better and the same with Burge

I agree. But not in an arrogant way, I truly believe that if we do go in with genuine ambition toward most players, they would come here. I said most because of course, the lad from Sheff U won't probably and Sanderson. re Making Ipswich stronger, I agree also_Our chance as real top favourites to go up gets less every season, am more quality teams come down, we get further away imo.

Agree with the 3 to 4 seasons in the championship to rebuild the damage done by short and the chancers. The club is about to take off and I'm so grateful to be here to witness it. Hhaaawwwwwaaaaaayyyyyyyy the Lad's

Yeah, I'd go with that. I think that's exactly the order of the club's preferences too piecing together media reports and ITK info.

Spurs have three left-backs ahead of him, he has some ridiculous competition so best for him to move elsewhere.

Guaranteed first choice for us once he gets match fit given Hume is injured. Plenty of time to make a positive impact.

I know that journalist - used to report my hometown club and chatted to him a few times. Good, decent chap. No reason to think he'd make stuff up
