Is that why so many people drive above 70mph on motorways?

If you're trying to make a case that driving is safe without people speeding then you're surely an ostrich.

You can be killed by something less intelligent than an idiot... A tree for example, a sign coming off in the wind and decapiting you, the car malfunctioning, an unseen pothole, bad weather, sink holes, cattle on the road, falling asleep, a heart attack, a jackknifed lorry, ice, cyclists and countless other things make the roads incredibly dangerous.

Accidents can happen in a car even when you are driving safely, though that usually involves somebody else driving like an idiot. Things like potholes and mechanical breakdown shouldn't kill you if you are driving safely and have the driving abilities and hazard awareness that you should have to be on the roads. When it comes to flying debris in the wind then I'd prefer to be inside a car than walking outside of it.

And the point about driving above 70mph was that you said it was dangerous between 20 and 70, so just a **** joke

I am not backing out of any position. I haven't changed my mind on anything. Driving is no more dangerous than many other activities in day to day life. Of any danger that is there, nearly all of it is caused by people not driving properly.

The statistics back this up too. 0.00242% of the UK population are killed on our roads each year. That includes all forms of road deaths - driving, cycling, pedestrians. That makes the roads in the UK the 5th safest place in the world to drive/cycle/walk by death rate. It also means the death rate on our roads is only 70.55% of the death rate of injuries sustained in other activities, which has an annual death rate of 0.00343%

Without idiots on the road the death rate would be even smaller than it is now.

More people die from trips and falls than road related deaths every year.

If driving is dangerous then I hope you never walk. Walking (anywhere) is 41.7% more likely to kill you due to trips and falls than driving, cycling or crossing a road. If I was you I would stay locked in your bunker and never come out. Life will be much safer that way

The fact you know someone who died through hitting black ice is a genuine tragedy that I wouldn't want to make light of. That in itself doesn't make the activity inherently dangerous though.

I know someone who died in a crush at the Monsters of Rock festival at Donnington Park in the 1980s. I know someone else who died walking home from the pub and who fell into a 6 inch deep stream and drowned. Both were tragedies, but I wouldn't say going to music festivals or walking home from the pub were inherently dangerous.

There are risks associated with absolutely anything in life and tragedies happen. We make risk assessments everyday in everything we do. Those risks don't make an activity inherently dangerous. So in answer to your question. I believe there are dangers on the road as with everything else in life. I don't believe roads are inherently dangerous though.

Deaths on the road are almost always down to driver, rider or pedestrian error. I don't think roads are particularly dangerous to be on now. Without people making errors they would be almost completely safe barring a few random accidents (such as falling trees) that are just as dangerous in or out of a car.
