First weekend for a while with no football to talk about except gossip and transfer stories.
- Free Agents available if you can afford the wages, but most of these will be hoovered up by Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid as they try and sell some top players for cash because of massive debts and recruit freebies: Messi, Sergio Ramos, Aguero, Wjinaldum, Luis Donnarumma, David Alaba, Javi Martinez, Juan Mata, Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia, Lucas Vazquez,, Santos Borre, Hartem Ben Arfa
- Will any club outside the so-called top 4 be able to do what Leicester did and win the premier League? Lets face it the season they did it there was a perfect storm of crappies. Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea all competed for being poorer than Leeds Utd were at that time in the Championship. Leicester have progressed but could they do it again, or anyone else?
- Heard Tracey Crouch in an interview this morning and she has said, that the football authorities have promised to sort out football governance for 20 years and not done it. She is doing a full review of football and said by the end there will be a new structure that governs football, and the FA, EFL, Premier League will do what they are instructed to do because enough is enough. So it seems a body will look at footy now and make sure owners rules, financial rules etc are sorted once and for all. ESL started this so well done you greedy so-called top 6.
- After listening to Crouch it got me wondering about government hand-outs to football, especially through the pandemic. Yes the furlough scheme and some guaranteed business loans has helped clubs lower down the pyramid, but it’s a joke compared to the money we give to The Arts! The Arts is a minority, elitist pursuit and takes in highbrow Opera, orchestras, theatres, galleries, lefty actors and artists etc. Yes people go to London to take in a show but in reality the fans at one Leeds Utd match are many many more than go down to London from Leeds to see a show. 630,000 Leeds fans go through the turnstiles every season, and millions more pay to watch live games around the world. Yet it seems populist pursuits like football are deemed not worthy of grassroots funding, indeed our football pitches have been sold from under us. Kids playing football at school and boys clubs leads to Sunday league and up to the amateur game and up to lower league bottom of the pyramid football. Participants are in their millions and fans many more millions yet hardly a penny handed over. Arts are for the elites and this year were given £1.57bn and then topped up because of the pandemic by another £257m!!!! Football got an emergency £10m support package. The Football Foundation is funded by The premier league and the national Lottery threw in another £2.1m. This is a massive disparity and I suggest any political party who decided to reduce funding of The Arts and start putting money into grassroots football and lower league football would win every election.
