Mark Ashton seems to be quite clever in managing the affairs, along with all other interested board members. Your statement says he is managing the squad, do you also mean he dictates what players the coach is allowed to have, or not have should he sell one to balance the books?

I also don't see where it says when this setup started, looks to me approx 3 years in to LJ's reign.....the publication wouldn't have been far off (May 2019)

Sell off other squad/fringe players, which would be the answer to me, hence reducing the wage bill.....complying with ffp.
I remember many times SL stating that our best players were not for sell and we weren't in a position where we would have to sell.
And at the time, who would have known what offers would have been made and if any clubs would have been interested.....it wasn't a given.
IMO the opportunity was there, just never had the bottle to see it through.
So the only way we can progress at this club is to rely on average players because any decent ones need to be sold off or rely on the academy?
With all this in mind, I can't really understand why we changed coach.......nothings changed!!
A alternative was not building up such a large squad in the first place. And again Clubs sell star players and put into place strategies - Southampton have been masters of this.
I don’t understand your point about bottle. Bristol City have been taking advantage of the upper threshold of financial fair play, Mr Lansdown has redeveloped the ground, increased income massively, increased spending on the squad massively supporting Lee Johnson to the point where financial fair play regulations would have been broken till assets where sold. Mr Lansdown pushed the boat out.
Don't get me wrong, having a business man such as SL has been a blessing for this club, but he is a business man with an expensive hobby/toy. He knows exactly what to do in relation to the business side of things, I very much doubt in the end he will be out of pocket....it's not in his DNA.
But I'm not convinced by his decisions regarding footballing matters. What's required to progress from where we were and where we are now. He has in the past (not sure how much now) has had input with team affairs with various managers, (Coppell being one of them) so makes me wonder what impact that has.
Logic says to me, that you build your team around better players, you don't sell them off if you are looking to progress towards promotion.
I agree with you regarding large squads, so long as you have backup allowing for injuries. Question is, who decides on the size of the entire squad? Can't believe it's only down to the first team coach.
Other clubs put in strategies to Manage how they sell players e.g. Southampton. Mr Johnson initially appeared to be applying a similar strategy in regards to development that would run through the club. We've debated this several times before and I provided links to Mr Johnsons comments dating back to 2016.
Very quickly Mr Johnson abandoned his own ideas. The club in four years had no established system of play. Each season multiple styles of football were used leading to the need for additional players, leading to Mr Johnson creating larger and more costly squads leading to the inevitable cost cutting.
Mr Johnson signed players for systems he didn't play - clubs in the bag.
Mr Johnson signed ones for the future he didn't play.
Mr Johnson signed players like Diony and Kent on loan.
Wasted resources.
Yes Mr Johnson was signing these players. I put links going back to 2017 in posts outlining Mr Johnson outlining his exhaustive process where players were meticulously researched for months so their dna met the project. Mr Johnson also promoted Jamie McCallister so he could spent more time on recruitment. Mr Johnson was responsible for the squad size and those in it - He said nobody joined without his say so l before 2019.
Well to your first point, why did he abandon his own ideas has to be a question, why did he sign players he didn't intend to use, sounds to me he didn't have the control we were led to believe.
Also the article you are referring to regarding nobody joined without his say so was produced May 2019, 3 years into his tenure. so we don't know when that was setup, my guess is quite close to when the article was produced...
Are we saying that we now have Holden in full control of who comes in and who goes out??

I think he's in Love with the Southampton system, whom themselves have struggled keeping a competitive side together up until this season..
Sticking with Hasenhuttl, adjusting to the style of play that he was renowned for, keeping his best players but bringing the likes Kyle Walker & Theo Walcott in, has been the key to their recent success!!!

I remember asking the question so many times to those wanting a replacement, what decent or experienced coach is out there, that's available, that would be interested to come here within our budget?

Dean is in, there can not be any excuses, he and the board knew what they were getting themselves into.

And so did LJ and he singularly failed to build a midfield, capable of defending games and winning games on a consistent basis, in the end in desperation he spent half of the fee from the Brownhill sale on a striker fast approaching 30 years of age, when Stevie Wonder could have told him it was doomed to failure, we were never going to be able to supply Wells with the sort of chances he has thrived on in his career, those chances in and around the opponents penalty area, because for except for the first 5 months of 2017, since we have looked pretty up to the final 3rd of the pitch and then the ideas just evaporate, we lack quality, we lack organisation, we lack creativity and we still lack leaders.
In a way LJ has probably dodged a bullet in reality, yes we have injuries but we also have poor squad, with the exception of Bentley the 24mil worth of signings from summer 2019 are not now worth anywhere close what we paid for them, so the star player sales to fund new signings + profit has dried up and we are no further forward.

a pretty impressive list I wonder how many left ? transfer free or otherwise there was a good old mixture some were youngsters for the future that never made the grade went into academy … how many still at city? Will have to consult the oracle
