Genuine question - why is it the government's responsibility?

This is what I am referring to when I say idiots. I won’t dwell as it’s on the other thread.

It's the government's responsibility to make preparations for situations such as this and to mitigate their impact. They told us that they had prepared for exactly this situation as part of the anticipated Brexit chaos, and that everything was under control. At the time Johnson was telling us that there were only 170 trucks stranded, you could look at pictures on the news and count more than that. Of course France closing its border was not under our government's control, but after Hancock's hysterical statement about the virus being 'out of control' here, it shouldn't have been a surprise.

That is the worst post you have written in a long time Stoller. It’s utter rubbish and just stinks of you trying to blame someone who has no control of what happened.
People forget that we don’t finish the transition period until the 31st December. This is just a political stunt from Macron to force our hand and cave in over a cr2p deal.
This stunt is to cause as many problems as possible so a few people here can say “I told you so”. It’s actually done the opposite and people are turning on Macron.
We don’t need these stunts while many are suffering through this pandemic. Even me ( Mr Brexit) And many others are more concerned with the EU lorry drivers safety and position than worrying about a.deal.
Holding up those drivers will not stop the spread of the virus.

This I can sort of agree with.... you know my maths is not that great however they have announced that a mobile testing station is to be set up at Dover to test 3000 drivers.

It was announced yesterday that we are moving to level 5 and our 3rd lockdown from Christmas Eve until at least 12th January. Pubs, Gastropubs, Hotels, Hairdressers, Nail Bars all have to close, however for the time being Gyms, Golf Club, Tennis Clubs can stay open. There is a staggered travel ban from midnight on Boxing Day whereby travel is restricted to your own county but people who are away from their own county visiting relatives have until 3rd January to return to their own home......

Infection rates have doubled in the past week with the R number could be as high as 1.8 to 2.0 and is far worse than any of our CMO's predictions.......There will be a Garda presence on the border with Northern Ireland to stop travel as well as on roads between counties.....

The Government, or Leo to be precise estimate that this lockdown could last until the end of February.......

Also just been announced that all Government ministers are restricting their movements after a member of Cabinet tested positive for COVID......

    Not looking good........

Bad news. Are people blaming poor compliance with previous restrictions, students, a/the new variant, or people coming from the UK? Anybody been vaccinated over there yet?

WTF is Blair on about, only give one jab to get more people covered, vaccinate the spreaders, ie in his eyes the young, rather than the vulnerable? Where is the science that says this is a good idea? What next, only give half a dose so it goes further? ****wit.

Compliance wasn't too bad, there are always exceptions but generally the public accepted what we were told and observed the guidelines........There was an instance last week in Wexford where 200 people attended a funeral of a 98 year old lady with a huge family, travelling over from UK and USA with no contact tracing which has resulted in a huge spike in cases in what was the County with the lowest number of cases per 100k, gone from 34 to 301 per 100k in a week.

Yesterday we had 970 new cases compared to <500 on 17th December.......The suspicion is that this is the new variant causing the spike......

It is worrying/annoying to see so many UK registered cars here when a travel ban was imposed at the weekend, suspect people have been travelling via Northern Ireland then driving South.......Government now saying that all those who arrived from UK since 8th December need to self isolate for 14 days......good luck with that one......

Re the vaccination, as we were dependant on the EU to approve the Pfizer vaccine and they only got around to doing that on Monday we're way behind the UK in starting, the Health Minister said today that they expect to start the roll out on 30th December buth they do not expect high levels of the vaccine to arrive until March, April or May.........The UK were right on that one to go it alone......

    Deep joy all round......

Anyone know about the other side of the border. Are there queues of people trying to get into Britain?

When I was in Calais last January the customs park for Brexit and customs was already built...and they had toilets and rest centres being built.

One of the main things we were calling for last February was to close our borders like NZ did. We didn't...and we got into an awful mess.

On Covid grounds alone we needed to close our borders...and set up testing stations so that negative people could travel through the "closed" borders.

To me this is not a political argument. It is a sensible Covid action...which we should have been on top of.. and not take 2 days to react to .

Anyone know the story of the village of Eyom

    Derbyshire plague village?

Ideological issues in interfering in people’s lives by reducing freedom of movement, testing etc etc. Hold on, freedom of movement......it is political I’m afraid.

I'm sorry, but it's utter remainer, blinkered nonsense to suggest that Macron's actions were anything other than political posturing over Brexit.
That jumped up little squirt is the main reason we still don't have a deal, although there are encouraging signs today.
The stupid thing is that, the vast majority of people Macron Bonaparte has pissed off are his own and other mainland Europeans.
    An utter arse!

I think the French fishermen had a word in his ear.

The French like a little blockade.

    Disgraceful behaviour.

    I'll mention it for ya!

My view is that no country has full sovereignty any more. We live in a world economy for a start

Within Europe most of the key EU members signed up to the Euro so no longer have the influence they might have done over key elements of monetary policy. And of course most also signed up to Schengen so have to guarantee free movement too

We will never have full sovereignty in the UK either - anyone who believes that we will / could doesn't understand the full implications of the word
