Patties are essential also. Anyone who says otherwise should be ejected forcefully from the city. On the curry vs Peas issue, I prefer mushy peas personally. Not even a close contest. However, neither curry nor peas will ever touch my fish. They are for the chips only. What is absolutely required on your fish is salt and vinegar.
As I don't live in the city then I can say patties are not essential without fear of having to find a new abode. Not that I don't like them.
