They are clearly calculating that this won’t cost them anything electorally, as they UK is fast becoming the Nasty Country (as shown by current attitudes to refugees, EU nationals, and pretty much any other foreigners that aren’t far right Americans or Australians).

You are preaching to the converted. What is needed is for the Express, Mail and Telegraph to start preaching the same message. They need to be more critical of this so-called UK Government, which is a Government of the few, by the few, for the few.

If we leave without a deal I would imagine that a lot of more sensible Tories will have major reservations about the direction the party is going in. I think Boris is heading for a train crash. There was an article in the Sunday Telegraph yesterday which suggested that his popularity rating amongst Conservative members had dropped to 24% amid growing concern that he is not up to the job. The general public has lost confidence and there are grumbling amongst his fellow MPs that Covid has resulted in the diminution of his faculties. There was a further revelation regarding the debacle at PM's questions where Boris is supposed to have been incandescent with rage having been poorly briefed before appearing before Parliament. It also suggested that Sunak was maneuvering himself in to position as a potential successor with Boris allegedly keen to put the brakes on the Chancellor's ambitions. Given that this was coming from a Right Wing newspaper, the dissatisfaction appears to be quite widespread. There is no way that Boris will remain at the helm for the duration of this parliament and, I would argue that is he has a "Gillian Duffy moment" with a member of the public, the credibility will shrink even further. I really get the sense he is already fatally compromised and both the printed and television media are circling anticipating the next big political story.
I would suggest that no matter how low his popularity might be, with Tory members, if Johnson called a general election for next week, they would all still vote for him. Party always comes first, at whatever cost to the country.
I think that ended when the coalition did. As much as they have been battered for their time there and tuition fees was a fiasco, events since the Conservatives gained majority control show that the Lib Dem's did have some kind of influence. A crooked outdated 'democratic' political system based on precedent and gentlemen's agreements, with a dodgy voting system behind it and the former class based education system leaving the people educated under it susceptible to manipulation (as shown in the Brexit demographics), which the Conservatives quite fancy returning to funnily enough. The lack of legally binding constitution and failure to modernise the electoral system made Britain a soft target for this.
