I suspect the market will generate more income than the Fair, but I think both are decent earners for the Council.
Yes. Although it costs the SMC due to the increase in liability. There's a report on the web somewhere that was linked a while back.
Cautious of posting this as I fear the worst for the replies, but the Government have just given themselves the ability to build lorry parks without any consultation with local government in a limited number of local council areas close to ports including both ERYC and HCC: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...er-to-build-brexit-lorry-parks-across-england Full legislation and list of areas affected here: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/928/made I'm sure there's better locations along the A63 corridor, but it made me wonder whether there's any possibility of a large and more or less ready to go area of tarmac that HCC have always protected for its use one week of the year being requisitioned?
Emma Harding posted something on her Facebook a couple of weeks back saying the government had invited her to a meeting as they were looking at a site in her constituency, that was also in the East Riding, and the only one she could think of was the Humber Bridge car park, but that’s being used for COVID testing for the foreseeable.
Walton Street, Humber Bridge and Glanford Park have all been in the contingency planning for over a year, but it’s unlikely they’ll actually be used (at least not for any significant period of time).
Interesting. I couldn’t really see that Walton Street has sufficiently good road links to the docks in any seriousness, but nor could I think of many other locations actually in Hull rather than the East Riding that would be appropriate. So if it’s Hull West & Hessle but not HCC then the bridge car park would be ideal, but as you say is already taken. I don’t know whether there’s any other parcels of land near The View (I think that’s what it’s called) that haven’t been built on yet?
Can't remember whether it was Melton or Welton, but isn't there some land thereabouts that the Allams didn't get to use ? Development opportunity for another subsid. business ?
Possibly, but you’d think a lorry holding park would really want to be as close to the docks as possible and Welton’s getting even further away. Which is what started me on Walton Street, mainly in jest, but there can’t be that many big chunks of undeveloped land somewhere relatively close to the docks without heading further eastwards out of the city, which I doubt anyone would want.
It wouldn’t surprise me, though it would make it a quite a lot slower slow lane - delays of 2 days expected...
Bloody Hell, it also very much suggests that Walton Street is a goer, with the A63 only used after that.
If all these truck drivers (sorry, lorry drivers !) are football fans, and a cheap transport cafe is set up on the fairground site, HCAFC may benefit !
It's bonkers isn't it, what is going to stop rogue drivers from simply carrying on up the A63 without their checks on arrival, once they leave the dock? The lorries that most need to be inspected by customs will probably be the least likely to actually comply. Our dock infrastructure, what there is of it, was not built to anticipate this. The impact on traffic for all the sites mentioned will be huge. The roundabout off the A63 at North Ferriby/Hessle West regularly clogs up (in pre-COVID times anyway) at rush hour - it used to take me 10-15 minutes to get off the A63 and get to the roundabout if I timed it wrong, because it was backed up from the Bridge. Both the Walton Street and Humber Bridge lorry park options are going to put more pressure there, and I'm not convinced the junctions have the capacity to cope with the existing traffic, let alone more. Plus we all know what the A63 is like anyway, with one broken down lorry on Castle Street bringing Hull to a halt - only now with added roadworks for the next 5 years.
I suspect that after a few weeks of severe teething problems few drivers will just ignore the inwards inspections, but even so if these are taking place after they leave the secure territory of the docks then the scope for smuggling is immense. What stops any of us renting an industrial unit somewhere between the docks and Walton Street, all of which is public highway that they can't just close off to us local residents, and 'skimming off' part loads before they get to Walton Street? This is true wherever the holding area ends up unless it's contiguous with the pre-customs side of the incoming border.
These holding areas are for inward traffic, as they expect the checks to take longer to get them onto the ferries in the first place, there's little point in worrying about those who've already left.
