Praise from the gaffer for young Neil there. Good to hear and hope he's another academy lad that can prove himself good enough for league football this season, along with Diamond. H'way the youngsters there marra.

“Tuesday might come too soon for Elliot and I've got to say, Dan Neil came on and was excellent,” he said.

“He's been another standout in pre-season so far with his footballing ability and did well today, just like Jack Diamond [who produced an assist for Will Grigg’s goal].”

Diamond, Embleton and Neil all need to be around the first team squad this season.

Be class if those three prove themselves good enough. That would give us 5 academy graduates in the first team squad that could all potentially improve further. I'd be well chuffed at that.

Exactly bud. Now more than ever is the time to do it due to the salary cap

Those of a certain vintage will remember when Jimmy Adamson threw in Rowell, Arnott and Elliott in the team in the Mid 70's...their youth, enthusiasm and skill transformed a team of plodders, we played, Middlesbrough, West Brom and West Ham won 4-0, 6-1 and 6-0...great days

Apart from the 1973 run this was my favourite spell watching Sunderland, though it all ended up in tears. Seems to be the SAFC way. <laugh>

We were the lowest scorers in the division till we went on our unbeaten run, also Boro had the best defence, but we knocked 4 past them.
