Prior to retirement, I was one of the managers in a large establishment, at the beginning of each year we would chose a charity and all money raised from our many charitable events during that year went to that particular charity. In reality, because of the community we were in, the chosen charity generally fluctuated between the RNLI and the Air Ambulance unless there was a local good cause with immediate needs. I chaired many of these meetings and all of the committee were fully aware of the aims and objectives of the charity that we chose to donate to.
People are free to chose who they help and how they spend their disposable income but I wouldn’t donate a penny without reading the mission statement of the charity and finding out the actual percentage of income available for the charitable purposes. Personally I applaud the RNLI for their work overseas, especially in third world countries. As the Bible says, if you give a man a fish, he will eat today, but teach a man to fish and he will eat forever.
