People are so quick to jump on anything that they perceive as controversial, racist, sexist etc that they are suppressing not only free speech, but, more alarmingly, the pursuit of knowledge. The knee jerk reaction to the MP who said that BAME people are driving Covid infection is a good example. The correct response to that is not 'shut up, you are being racist', but 'why do you think that, what is your evidence?' If there is none, then that can be aired. If there is some evidence, what can we do about it....how can these vulnerable groups be helped?
I am very uncomfortable with witch hunts of people...it creates a society of fear and cowardice.
Not sure how it's suppressing free speech. He's free to say what thinks and people are free to call him a moron. Works both ways.
I agree with your general point btw regarding witch hunts etc - espescially on social media - but don't think it's got anything to do with free speech.
