Not sure how it's suppressing free speech. He's free to say what thinks and people are free to call him a moron. Works both ways.

I agree with your general point btw regarding witch hunts etc - espescially on social media - but don't think it's got anything to do with free speech.

Wasn't really referring to people disagreeing with others....but objecting to vicious social media attacks, especially on people just because they don't hold the 'correct views'. And I am especially alarmed by how quickly companies fold in contentious situations....even when it has nothing to do with them. There are actions so bad that you should lose your job, but it is getting to the point where people run too scared to speak. And surprises happen when that occurs as no one has a clear idea of how the population thinks.

Totally agree Fran. Cancel culture has become a form of bullying. And some corps just 'bend the knee' (figure of speech, calm down) far too quickly.

I heard someone on television saying they should never ever repeat anything with Alf Garnet ever again as it is racist. I thought how could anyone miss the point so utterly as to not understand what it means to satirise an issue and the huge impact comedic satire has had on our racial outlook in this country. And don't get me started on what happens if you query anything the trans community wants taken as fact.

And the last ten years has provided the platform to make these people feel entitled, powerful & most dangerously, their opinions are the only correct option. And YouTube, Twitter and the like back them up. Anyone want a debate, but you better agree, or patreon will cancel you & you will be shut down.
Freedom of speech used to be a birthright, but it is being eroded quicker than ever.

Freedom of speech involves the right not to face government sanction for your speech. It does not and never has protected anyone's right to say stupid **** on social media.

Absolutely, but if you are too stupid to engage with views you dislike and instead hound people for their views, then free speech was not invented for you. Please go stick your keyboard in the bin and your phone up your nose.

And anyone who uses twitter is a tit anyway.

Yet someone gets to decide if your views are valid enough to have a viable channel. Loads of good content is being shutdown because someone in a position of power doesn't like the standpoint. Is that fair, is that okay? And we are not talking hate speech, we are talking expressing an opinion.

I feel like this ought to be accompanied by examples of the good content being shut down.

For me, those who get behind this cancel culture are those empowering radical right wing idiots. The ones who say 'political correctness gone mad' and 'you make everything about race'. People like Trump are a reaction to the whole 'your opinion is not valid and you are stupid' approach to debate which now dominates social media.

But, like, there's a whole bunch of good content being cancelled. For example, _________________.

I watched it at the time it was first broadcasted....Alf Garnett was laughed at and not with. Even as a child I knew he was the stupid one. I do have to say though, that there were people who missed the point....and there are plenty of people around like that now....most of them live in the American mid-west now. :) It was the same with Love Thy Neighbour...messages are delivered in a way that made people think at the time. And in Goodness, Gracious Me, the locals sometimes ran rings round the army lads. And of course, we would never cast a white man as an Indian now....why would we, when there are plenty of actors who can take the role now...at the time, they cast an experienced actor and thought nothing of it. There are things that are awful in any time, but you can't expect people in the past to have 21st century thinking. For example, beating up someone for being gay is wrong (stating the obvious), but disagreeing in principle with homosexuality in the 19th and early 20th century was not unusual,,,,so we should not judge good people who achieved great things because they expressed opinions that were commonly held 100 years ago.

I have seen serious efforts to cancel JK Rowling for having a view on womanhood which contradicts the in vogue idea of self definition defies all other rationales and any attempt to query this makes you hate trans people. The US is attempting to cancel the police when actually the issue is the 'war on crime' American voters demand and the love of guns which makes all us police scared and dangerous. A US policeman is killed every three days. Reform don't cancel. I have seen various old TV shows removed from streaming services, edited and put back. I have seen Britain relabelled as one of the most racist places, when I have been all over the world and every damn place was racist in some ways and most more racist than the UK.

It is just bandwagonning. No thought goes into it.

Beyond JK Rowling, that's an absolute word salad. And JK Rowling hasn't been "cancelled", she has come under scrutiny for saying a bunch of **** that people disagreed with. Which is how speech works. She has and will continue to have a very large platform to say things, and people are well within their rights to think that she would be better off shutting the **** up.

I have no problem with trans people...believe it or not, they existed in my youth as well :), but I am very fearful of early intervention in children. It's almost like it's a fashion....children do have passing phases. In the past, you let them get on with it and waited for them to get over it (in most cases). Early intervention is basically sterilising children.

I don't agree with trans women taking part in competitive sport though....they have advantages, including not having to deal with monthly cycles, that are unfair. Winning medals is not a human right.

None of the rest of it even remotely relates to anything that one could call 'cancel culture'. Like, no, believing that the police in the United States is prone to brutality and discrimination is not 'cancel culture'.

But wanting to cancel the police is not cancel culture? And wanting to cancel old Shows because you disagree with the content is not cancel culture?

Nobody said cancel culture was successful, but the current trend is to demand things people dislike are removed.

My word salad seems pretty healthy to me. Don't cancel it because it has a few overripe tomatoes.
