The 4 cables in the socket before you tried to add yours is the worrying bit. The diagram above shows a ring main, which is the most common form of wiring in the UK, and shows the maximum amount of cables to each socket would be 2. You are allowed to “spur” off a socket (there are rules but I won’t bore you!) so the very maximum number of cables to a socket would be 3.
