Agree, Stainsey, the Nazis co-opted those individuals from neighbouring nations who were willing to participate
Not to mention from all the collaborators in the other occupied countries who were only to happy to help if it meant their own countries surviving Nazi occupation.
****ing hell you are looking through history with amazingly Union Jack tinted spectacles and have been reading different history records to the rest of the world. The uk was massively culpable for suffering in the partition of India. You seem to want to absorb any blame from the uks action for anything let’s just say as history goes the uk has about the worst for all levels of atrocities. However should that be forgotten? No, should it reflect on the electorate today? Of course not. Do the sins of the father cast a shadow on the son? No, otherwise people would hold the West’s kids as tormentors rather than victims. sophistication is a very subjective word, if you look at education, child poverty, crime rates, rehabilitation as factors. Watford might well have a point.
It may have been ineptly done by the British but both Muslims and Hindus were pressing for separation. And they were the ones killing each other. Not the British. Six million Jews dead in 5 years. Give me a figure for British atrocities over 5 consecutive years.
True but it was mainly in the Eastern occupied countries that the willing participation in mass murder and torture took place. Making no excuse for others of course.
To play the devils advocate Wills, whilst the British at the time were happy for the different communities to destroy each other.....it was the communities themselves that did the killing. Sometimes, respectfully, you come over as not liking this country very much....which is a shame ‘cos we do have a lot to be very proud of as a nation.
That is amazingly specific, in a suits your specific requirements. This fella recons the following “…Nor is there any memorial to the massacres of the Raj, from Delhi in 1857 to Amritsar in 1919, the deaths of 35 million Indians in totally unnecessary famines caused by British policy,” Not saying he is 100% right but he definitely has a very valid point. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/...n-shashi-tharoor-british-empire-a7627041.html You also don't seem to have addressed why the generations of today are responsible for those of their forefathers? Should the Wests kids be locked up? Should all English fans be banned for the actions of English football holligans?
I don’t get your point Wills ? Are you saying we should have memorials up here for past massacres attributed to the British Empire ? If that’s what you mean then it’s a rather bizarre thing to say.......
I consider myself lucky to be have born into this Nation, I absolutely appreciate the sacrifices of others that allow me to live the life I have today, but if you have pride in the good that has been done you can't be selective and have to take on board the **** that has been carried out and the National shames, less not we forget the slave trade for starters
Not at all what I'm getting at but you can't just have a go at the Germans and ignore what has been done by the Brits
Why should I be ashamed at what our ancestors have done ? How far does this shame go back ? Should the Italians be ashamed for what they did in Abyssinia ? The French for what they did in Spain ? The Turks for what their ancestors did throughout Europe.....The English for the Crusades ? Where does a nations shame end ?
Let’s not get started on the slave trade Wills......we were far from innocent and it was horrendous but let’s not forget who sold us the slaves in the first place......
Yes but as you stated in your previous post and what I was getting at is why should the actions of the forefathers till be held over the people of today? Like seems to be the case of the German people.
I'm not talking about responsibility. I'm talking about intelligence, the genetic side anyway. Watford has it that much of the UK electorate is thick as mince ie low intelligence. And he held out Germany as being of greater sophistication. Yet many of their grand or great grandparents voted in Hitler. The UK electorate rejected Mosley. So I'm saying the UK electorate has greater genetic intelligence than Watford gives credit for.
There were unforgivable atrocities committed by the British (as there were by other Empire builders at the time) but over the whole duration of the British Empire, it doesn't come even slightly close to what the Nazis did in a short time
Agreed. There were many German anti fascists/Communists and Leftists whom hated the Nazis just as much as us. Maybe we’re making the same point here......and no nation (including ours) should be held accountable and ashamed for the actions of their forefathers. I always found it outrageous and bizarre that the vast majority of Turks can rewrite history and totally deny the appalling things that they did to the Armenians. It led to many rows between me and an ex of mine (who was Turkish) as she categorically denied that any atrocities had ever happened. It was all rather disturbing.
