Nobel Laureate Tasuku Honjo Refutes Link To ‘Man-Made’ Coronavirus Claim

2018 Nobel laureate Tasuku Honjo has refuted any link to social media posts that claim the SARS-CoV-2 virus was ‘man-made’ or ‘invented’ in a lab. SHARE AsianScientist (Apr. 28, 2020) – Professor Tasuku Honjo, co-awardee of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, has refuted any link to social media posts that claim the SARS-CoV-2 virus was ‘man-made’ or ‘invented’ in a laboratory. “In the wake of the pain, economic loss, and unprecedented global suffering caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, I am greatly saddened that my name and that of Kyoto University have been used to spread false accusations and misinformation,” Honjo said in a statement released by Kyoto University today. While comparative analysis of genomic data has shown evidence that SARS-CoV-2 is not a laboratory construct or a purposefully manipulated virus, the notion that the SARS-CoV-2 virus was invented has continued to receive mileage on social media platforms. “At this stage, when all of our energies are needed to treat the ill, prevent the further spread of sorrow, and plan for a new beginning, the broadcasting of unsubstantiated claims regarding the origins of the disease is dangerously distracting,” Honjo said. Honjo is currently the deputy director-general and a distinguished professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Kyoto University, Japan. In 1992, Honjo discovered programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1), a key player in tumor immunology. He showed that PD-1, a protein expressed on the surface of a subset of immune cells known as T-cells, functions as a brake on T-cell function, and that blocking PD-1 would help to restore T-cell targeting of cancer cells. The Japanese immunologist’s findings paved the way for the use of PD-1 inhibitors as cancer treatment in human patients. Clinical development ensued, and in 2012 a key study demonstrated clear efficacy in the treatment of patients with different types of cancer, with patients experiencing long-term remission. In a 2016 interview with Asian Scientist Magazine, Honjo said his personal philosophy was to show “curiosity, courage and challenge” in his research pursuits. Two years later, Honjo was honored with the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for his discovery of PD-1 and its significance to cancer immunotherapy. “This is a time for all of us, especially those of us devoting our careers to the forefronts of scientific research, to work together to fight this common enemy. We cannot delay one moment in this effort to save the lives of our fellow humans,” Honjo urged.

Sorry Beth but stop talking rubbish. This is not about upmanship and I am saddened you have stooped so low as to try and go down that road. Know about the previous posts or don’t comment.
Sorry but it annoys me when good posters like you act like some others.
This thread is becoming as clicky as the other one.

Or just a massive coincidence that the vast majority see your posts for what they are, and being as disrespectful and dismissive to Beth, who from what I can see is respectful to everyone, has you showing your true colours yet again. Personally I think you should apologise, but you won’t see this as you can’t deal with people who call you on your Tory propaganda. Very poor form.

Again, to clarify, it’s not rubbish. For the last time I’ll explain.

This isn’t a matter of opinion. The definition of who they’re including is there in black and white and only includes those tested. We have been unbelievably slow in testing and for weeks didn’t consider it important “for rich countries like us” (Jenny Harries) which went against “the science” of just about all of the rest of the developed world. That is clearly going to mean a hell of a lot of community deaths aren’t included.

Or consider the proportion of deaths outside of hospital elsewhere to what ours would be if this number was a true representation. We’d be 14.9% versus around and often above half elsewhere in Europe.

    It’s really simple.

I did the maths and my 15% was a good guesstimate. 14.9% in fact.

How that man can stand on national tv and class this as success is beyond delusional! "Guided by the science" has been see through now, from herd immunity to lockdown, from no face masks to face masks, from no airport screening to now thinking of doing it?!?! Even the biggest fans of this blustery bullshitter cant deny the absolute hypocrisy, incompetence and downright lies of this government!

They can and will and he and Cummings know that. They will have a large core support regardless of how many people die, how many nurses die, how badly dented the economy is, how many of their own targets they miss because there is that strong a devotion to Johnson and/or Brexit (mainly Brexit let’s be honest, cue crying about politicising).

It doesn’t really matter how obviously awful you are to the minority if the majority back you. What is scary is how the supporters double down in their devotion against any criticism. Even some of the right wing press have dared to question if maybe this isn’t going all that well and the reaction is that the press can’t be trusted and have an agenda against the government.

It’s all very Orwellian having the Ministry of Truth pumping propaganda into our living rooms every afternoon at 5.

To summarise, some people are just so simple it beggars belief. As long as they believe we are going through an alpine tunnel and can see a glimpse of pature then it's all been a success.

I think it’s more than that and I’m not clever enough to understand it because we’ve always had the same electorate more or less but never this fanaticism especially not from people who are otherwise not simple at all. I don’t think it’s the simple who are even the issue really.

Simple to not see through the script. Ministers had one provided for brexit and it's obvious to see how uncomfortable they are with their coronavirus script.

Sorry mate but I was responding to your comments on Sunday. It has nothing to do with ‘upmanship’. In fact if you remember I said that it’s sad those figures are that high and not to be so ‘doom and gloom’ about the 40k you quoted. Posters shouldn't have all their posts hijacked and misquoted. Sadly I thought it was just the ‘ likely lads’ that did that, I have now been proved wrong.
However it makes no difference what I say because it appears that the site has its own ‘herd’. I said before it has become very ‘clicky’ on here which is not a good thing. I will let all the experts have their ‘love in’ on this thread.
