I think he probably means lets hope we never see the outcome of such a thing without measures being taken to prevent it.

I was wrong at the start of all this mate and am more than happy to admit it. When it kicked off in China and even when Italy first started to spread my attitude was "it's the flu, i have heard it all before with SARs etc", when Italy started to develop my attitude changed big time.

Like you say, learn from lessons.

Diego is correct in his interpretation. I just mean that it's good to not have the numbers for if no measures had been taken as they would surely be much higher. The high end of the estimates were that 70-80% of the western world could have contracted it and half the world populace overall. The current death rate is 4% though the likely figure is more like 1-2% and is expected to drop down towards that though never get quite that low as many people who have it but with mild symptoms will not get tested. At those numbers you're looking at 40 million deaths (1% of half the world population) up to 100 million. Clearly they are very bleak and perhaps they were always unrealistically high. We'll never found out, probably, hopefully. It seems that it's not going to go beyond about 250k which, whilst tragic, is almost certainly some amazing work at reducing the death toll it's just that we'll not know how amazing it was.

In the end both camps will claim they were right. Those who said it was going to be terrible will argue the measures worked and those who think it's all a storm in a teacup will argue that the final death count isn't actually that high (and ignore the impact of the measures) and compare it to a standard flu (like comparing apples with pairs).

    Yeah true !
I brought it up at work at the beginning of March and people just laughed and made a joke of it !
Some still dont see it as a big issue and are saying that we will all be immune by November ! Even booking holidays for later Nov/Dec .
Not sure anything other than losing family or friends will really hit home for some !
    I still get "" Well if I die i die :emoticon-0121-angry.
I dont think that attitude would be in their mind if they ended up in an ICU bed

You might be waiting a long time. I’m still waiting for that Russia report to be published, the one the government sat on during the election campaign.

21 Transport for London staff have died. Public transport is being kept open for key workers only. You still using trains unnecessarily?

More worrying developments being reported in china

A mutation found in india could make the vaccine obsolete before it's been developed

Evidence that Covid-19 may behave in the same way as HIV by killing immune cells, making it harder for the body to fight off.

And two studies into hydroxychloroquinine have been called off due to the drugs ability to cause heart failure.

I work for a train company, yes. Members of the public are being urged to use public transport only if they are key workers on their way to work. There are signs all over the stations down here, and regular announcements.

What are you supposed to do if you can't work from home and have no other means of transport?

Use public transport. That’s the whole point, that’s what it’s there for, to get key workers to work. Not for jaunts and jolly boy’s outings, not to visit friends and relatives - which you shouldn’t be doing anyway.

Actually I don’t really care who uses it, Saffy just winds me up so I bit again.

Quite a few of my colleagues on the railway do care though, and get annoyed at people travelling unnecessarily.

I'm not talking key workers though. Plenty of people can still go to work that aren't key workers.

So it’s not only for key workers. This is the point I’ve been making since Sunday.

    Thanks.

I think the point he is making is that unless you can work from home or your place of work is closed you’re still allowed to go to work under current government guidelines.

The government isn’t saying only key workers are allowed to work.
