Anybody whose journey isn’t essential is being asked not to use public transport. Perhaps your journey, with your dog, that you were posting photos of was essential. In which case I apologise for thinking you were being a bit of a ****.

As I said this morning, 21 Tfl staff have died after contracting Coronavirus, that’s quite a lot of people. In London alone.

There is little to no PPE available for these workers, as what there is is going to the NHS.

People don’t seem to understand the difference between a chronic illness and the actual cause of death.

A chronic illness is one that’ll not be cured i.e. the patient will have the condition for the rest of their life. In many cases the chronic illness does end up being the cause of death, BUT chronic doesn’t mean terminal and so many of these old folk in nursing homes who are dropping like flies with COVID, are dying from COVID. Their chronic illnesses will merely make their prognosis once having contracted COVID bleak. It becomes extremely bleak when they’re being denied access to any form of ventilation and care in a hospital.

The attitude from some seems to be ‘well they’d have died anyway’ so meh. Only the point is they might have had years of life left had they not contracted COVID.

Fine, I don’t want to get into an argument about how you define a key worker, or who genuinely has to work and who doesn’t.

The message in London anyway, is that the transport network is being kept open for essential journeys only, in particular for the use of key workers. You can’t miss that message if you use a rail or underground station. It’s pretty clear, and it’s equally clear that some people are ignoring that message.

For the record, I’m not personally in favour of compulsion, excessive restrictions, or heavy handed policing.

The number of deaths due to Covid 19 is being seriously understated. Things like care-homes and people dying outside of hospitals has been highlighted. Not sure if anyone's mentioned this before but even those dying in hospital are under-represented each day...

More important, and something that is widely misunderstood, the deaths that are reported are not those that have actually occurred in the 24 hours in question. The NHS now provides a breakdown of the deaths announced each day in England by when they took place. In a report published on 7th April, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) compared the cumulative death toll in England by Friday 27th March (announced in the government press conference on the 28th) against the NHS figures that allocate the deaths to when they actually occurred. The headline number was 926 up to that Friday. By contrast, the date-of-death series recorded 1,649 by 27th March, almost 80 per cent higher. That latter figure came from NHS data out on 5th April. These numbers continue to be revised. Using a more recent NHS release, of 9th April, the date-of-death figures show even more deaths—1,728 had occurred by 27th March.

Looking at the position a week later, on Friday 3rd April, the headline cumulative death toll in England by then was 3,939, as announced the following day (in the government press conference). The NHS date-of-death series (published on 9th April) recorded 5,037 for 3rd April —28 per cent higher.

“These reporting delays are substantial and they matter,” says Sheila Bird, a leading statistician and a former programme leader at Cambridge University’s MRC Biostatistics Unit. In particular, they mean that the headline total has been undercounting the scale of the death toll from Covid-19.
 
By the way, if you want to know the actual total deaths INCLUDING care homes then the ONS publish it every Tuesday but it's only for England & Wales not the whole of the UK and it has an 11 day lag. Today's figures (with the lag) will be out later.
 
I managed to find some data last night before bed but now I can’t find it again. I believe all of this current year we’ve been running behind the 5 year average on a weekly basis (for deaths) until the week starting 27th March. It’ll be interesting looking at that again once April has been fully updated.
 
Still everybody turning a blind eye to deaths going down as Covid-19 when that might not have been the main cause of death. It’s almost like we are all playing to our political agendas, again.

Exactly this, the chance of covid-19 killing you is the same as your chance of dying this year. That does not mean everyone who dies of covid-19 would've died this year anyway. I find it utterly bizarre that so many should misconstrue the bleeding obvious point that those who are ill will be worse affected and more likely to die from it, does not mean their original illness is why they died. It's like saying your nan with diabetes wasnt killed by the flu that caused pneumonia because the diabetes would've got her eventually anyway.

It's give and take,
How many will die sooner as a result of weakened pulmonary system after they have survived covid-19?

It's a sad truth that those who survive through the use of mechanical ventilator for more than 24 hours will be forever effected.
 
Tbh I doubt we will get a real idea of how many deaths here or in other countries has occurred from this until we are able to see overall deaths for this year and subtract the expected number of deaths without covid.

E.g. if an average of 10 people die normally and we’ve had 15 deaths we can take an educated guess that up to 5 deaths occurred from Covid-19
