It’s still only killing old people and those with other health conditions.

It’s more the inconvenience and cost to the economy that is an issue rather than the virus itself. (Unless of course you’re one of those old ****ers!)

The coronavirus is so bad it's like having to live in the UK. No wonder Europeans are traumatised.

Yeah it’s only killing old folk and those with existing conditions, so **** ‘em, what do they matter?

The reason we have to take it seriously is because obviously we don’t want all our elderly to end up ****ed.

But it gives some perspective on the situation and means there isn’t a need to get hysterical about it, just sensible precaution.

As long as it's not your friends and family, eh mush?

I tend to agree with your second part but it's easy to say that it's **** all for as long as you're not affected personally.

Would it stop me from travelling to Italy, probably not, everything has to be put in to context. We had opportunity to contain this virus a year ago, so now it's like once the horse has bolted.

News media stating 16 million Italians quarantined. Well if people know their population and geography, I'd have a guess over 10 million are in the area of Lombardy in Northern Italy, with it containing the City of Milan. We have to remember that the quarantine stretches over to Venice and just north of Bologna (Modena) - although it has taken in Rimini. Now once you have drawn that geographical line, put that into the context of the rest of the country. I've not heard Florence having been affected yet, if it has then you can probably draw a geographical line from Pisa on the west coast, straight across to Rimini on the east. The overall population of Italy will be over 60 million. So that's 44 million unaffected in reverse psychology! Basically it would be like us quaratining London - London Metropolitan Area 10-18 million (number of residents depends on the definition used).

I’ve been in voluntary self isolation for the last handful of days, I’m unlikely to have the virus but have had contact with someone who has had contact with a confirmed case. The reality is I’ll probably have to go to certain things for work because I’ve not been officially advised to isolate. But because of relatives with certain conditions and certain clients being more susceptible I’ve chosen to do what I think is the right thing to do.

Everyone should make practical changes and follow advice as far as possible.

Doesn’t mean we should all panic or over hype what’s going on.

I don't think many people here are panicking or over hyping it. I'm just saying that saying it's 'only old people and those with health conditions' is fine until it's somebody you know.

If it was a 19 year old relative of yours that died would it still be 'only' somebody that had a previous health condition so never mind.

The comment about old people and those with existing health conditions is slightly tongue in cheek, but it’s to highlight that this isn’t something which needs to be blown out of proportion. People are acting like the plague has hit, panic buying toilet roll ffs! The media is in overdrive sensationalising it. When the reality is the vast majority of people may have a couple of days feeling under the weather if they catch it.

Practical steps should be taken to minimise the spread and the effect on the economy.

Absolutely. We can all do a little bit to help stop spread it even if we’re lucky enough to be unlikely to be too badly affected ourselves.

Just went to Morrisons which was even ****ter than usual.

I’ve cancelled my trip over there with my bird and taken the hit. Not so sure I’ve done the right thing after reading your post.

The numbers do seem to be spiralling over there though and we’ve both got family that would be high risk to being wiped out off the virus if we were to pass it on, so we decided against it.

We all have to make our own choices Saffy. There is no right or wrong, it's what you think is best for you. My geography was just trying to put some context into the situation. When you look at map, it makes you realise the restriction is in the heavily populated and wealthier North. So it's a bit like London being quarantined and cancelling a trip to Scotland. Whereas I've not heard anything on Rome, Naples and Bari (in the same context as the North).

With all this uncertainty I think this could have a devastating affect on the tourist industry, and businesses that rely on tourists money.

Yeah it’s a very real problem for airlines, hotels, tour providers etc in a lot of countries.

Personally I’m looking at various flights at the moment hoping to get a good deal whilst prices drop to try and encourage travel while coronavirus is scaring people.
