I think there are some misconceptions about food and health. For example, the incidence of heart disease in the UK and in the USA is far greater than in Japan, where the diet is low in cholesterol. But there is also a low level of heart disease in France, where cholesterol intake is as high as anywhere (think of those 246 varieties of cheese). Obviously the cause of heart disease is not cholesterol but speaking English.
I think you are speaking Double Dutch.

Do you take supplements? (Serious question as I understand some minerals and nutrients are difficult to get on a vegan diet)
I take B12, but interestingly research now suggests that even meat eaters should take B12 because although it’s present in meat (and not in vegetables) it doesn’t actually get taken into the body easily from meat anyway

we do actually take B3 too, but that’s not due to veganism it’s because it’s not bloody sunny enough and loads of people are B3 deficient.

I had my bloods done recently and despite carrying on drinking as I always have done, which is probably a little too much, all my levels (including all 5 different cholesterol measurements) are absolutely bang on in the healthy zone. I read something by a cardiologist association saying that your weight and fitness is irrelevant, if your cholesterol is bad then you’ll probably have a heart attack, if it’s good you won’t (my Dad did and died, too young, so that does hit home)

Sadly because I hadn’t planned to go vegan (I just tried it for a few days and felt healthier straight away so carried on) I didn’t get the bloods done before so I don’t know whether my diet has helped or not really (but I’m happy sticking with it as the levels are all good at the moment)

*keep an eye out for me on the RIP thread and if I did pop up there soon then ignore all this ;)

Vegans become vegans for varying reasons. Some for environmental reasons, some because that they are against the farming of animals for morality sake. So their information to promote their cause varies depending on their standpoint.

As another poster wrote, overpopulation, especially in Africa, is the issue and re-wilding/planting trees would offset a lot of the damage done, but no one wants to tell the Third world to stop having children or at least, to have them sustainably.
Don’t disagree with all that, and I went vegan for health reasons, but it is a fact that if less people are meat the areas used to grow the crops that currently feed cattle would feed a whole lot more of the worlds population.

I'm not sure we need to grow more food of any kind to feed the population. I heard recently, from UN sources, that 30% of the worlds food production is wasted annually. I think what is more important is that we don't rely on industrial-scale farming which is harmful to both landscape and soil, and that more food is produced and consumed locally. Of course this means no strawberries in November, or avocados in January (at least in the UK) but it might lead to a much more sustainable food production/consumption model. Might mean GM can be ditched aswell, we live in hope...

We don’t need to grow more food, we just need to eat the food we do grow instead of feeding it to cattle...

It’s ok, you can park your yacht on the jetty I’m building at my house

Beautiful sea views...eventually

Haha!! I’m back on her in 3 weeks... will send you the measurements for the jetty!!

Maybe we should arrange a not606 long weekend stay on the yacht? Anyone up for it?
@dennisboothstash in charge of the bar, @Sir Cheshire Ben on the BBQ, @Chazz Rheinhold sorting out the parties!! Who else are we missing Charmine? Not on here very often now

There are more varieties of cheese in this country than France. FACT.

Low heart disease among Eskimoes who live on a diet of fat. Low in areas of France which cook, everything in duck fat. They have just declared Spain, where the safe limit for alcohol is equivalent to 35 of our units as the healthiest country with a life expectancy in the top 5.Whereas the highest placed country for life expectancy where alcohol is prohibited is Kuwait at 37th.
Seems things which the health professionals deem bad for us in this country don’t seem as bad for others.
It couldn’t possibly be that these health professionals have a vested interest in this to extract more funding for research and naturally more wages, could it?

More or less agree but I believe that done properly there's room for both non-meat and meat eaters to get along side by side in a way that doesn't damage the environment. The ethical side of meat eating is another argument, which I don't intend to get into on this board!

Yeah I’m not vegan through an ethical view

I’ve never suffered with ethics! ;)

You may well be right, I’m no expert, but I think it is fair to say that it would be easier for that to be the case if meat production reduced at least
