Did we really sell tickets in advance back then?We sold 55,000 tickets for the game, an all time third tier record. The reason for the actual crowd being 49,000 was a bus drivers strike. Amazing that many got there when so few had cars. Wouldn’t happen nowadays. Heaven knows how early they left the game as their tea was waiting.
We have the highest average for a third tier season, 37,000. In the list of top averages we are just one place below Leeds and the only one in the top 25 to have achieved their highest average outside the top flight.
