Yes it would Beddy, but the truth of it is politicians rarely do what they say they will do when they are faced with the scale of the issues facing them. There's always the chance that Johnson will have an epiphany, dump the hard right nutters in his party and build more of a centralist government.
There's also a chance that Saints will win the Premier League, I will suddenly find Jacob Rees-Mogg endearing and the planet will heal itself overnight.
I ain't putting my money on any of them happening.
Is it a small victory that at least Labour forced the conservatives to promise to dump austerity?

Under any Conservative government it will always be a state of austerity for some, especially if you happen to be at the wrong end of the wealth chart, in need of help, or find yourself homeless.
The Tory Party are not going to turning into philanthropists any time soon.
Sorry for sounding sceptical about what they have in store for the country but this election smells of Thatcherism Mk.II without the honesty Thatcher clearly possessed.

I would say I feel your pain Badge, but that would be trite. Sometimes words are meaningless.
I thought I had stopped hating politicians when Thatcher stepped down, but it just got worse.
I might be wrong, but I can foresee a future where some businesses put all hourly paid staff on zero hours contracts, with just management being on employment contracts.
The savings to the businesses would be colossal, as the zero hour employees would be considered self employed.
No Employers National Insurance Contribution.
No Employers Pension Contribution.
No sick pay, although many companies already do this.
No holiday pay.
No maternity/paternity leave.
I wouldn’t put it past businesses, such as the major supermarkets, getting together and doing this at the same time, to prevent staff switching to companies that still used contracts with set hours.
And I can also foresee a “No fault dismissal” rule being introduced. This has already been mooted by one Tory MP, although I can’t recall who.
Roll on July 2021 when I can collect the pension that has been delayed by a year owing to the changes in retirement age.

This is just my opinion based on nothing other than my own distrust of businesses doing anything to improve employees rights and their own desire to increase their fortunes, at the expense of their employees.
Listening to Pfeffel's reconciliation speech it occurs to me that we are seeing the likely trajectory of this administration being played out just 23 miles from our shores. When it all goes wrong let us just hope we are not lumbered with another Corbynite no hoper that drives the voters into the arms of the nearest charlatan available.
I agree that it's not the EU to blame, but I think a lot of the trouble is that there are a lot manufacturing/manual labor jobs that have disappeared, and will not come back. The world and national economy has moved on.
By voting for Brexit they feel they can at least possibly try to hang on to their culture a little longer.

Maybe this has always been the case and I’ve just not noticed in the past because I didn’t pay as much attention in the past? But has there always been this amount of blatant lying involved in election campaigns? How can that be allowed to go on? How can the media like the BBC that is supposed to be neutral get away with being anything but neutral?
This isn’t a game. The bare minimum we should expect is truthful politicians that run truthful campaigns. Is that too much to ask? If there wasn’t any lying by politicians, supported and delivered by the media... and the Tories still won. I think I’d find that an easier pill to swallow.

What has changed, IMO, is not the propensity of politicians to lie, but rather the willingness of the populace to be lied to. Cynicism about politics is the norm, and it isn't really divided along partisan lines; the belief that all politicians are dishonest and self-serving is so ingrained that dishonest and self-serving behaviour scarcely moves the needle.
I think the lies have got worse. Technology means lies can be spread at an unprecedented rate.
If anyone hasnt watched 'The Great Hack' on netflix, I urge you to watch it. The fact it isnt a national scandal, and that data mining is still being used against the electorate is absolutely crazy.
The tories and their rich backers have realised how important a weapon technology is, on top of the media bias which was already there.
Unfortunately corbyn believed that his peaceful moral principles would shine through, but it just didnt work. His campaigning for peace, the media twisted into sympathy for the opposition, and once that narrative was out, he was unelectable.

Corbyn's issue wasn't that he was too pure and good for this world, it's that he seemed incapable of expressing his position on any issue in 1000 words or less. In a moment where decisiveness was necessary, his tendency to monologue was seriously misplaced.

In the pre-Internet and pre-mass media politicians lied viciously but they could get away with it. The populace did not have the same access to information and were largely uneducated. Propaganda was easy.
As time passed, you could not get away with as much so the lies were replaced with spins, statistical manipulation and vague statements.
Now everyone has so much access to information that lies are easily discoverable. I don’t know if there’s ever been a time where politicians have lied so blatantly in ways in which the public is fully aware of the lies and they simply don’t care.
I suppose one could argue that people have held little regard for the truth, we just didn’t fully realize it until now.
