Dare I say it, but with the new signings (the core of which are English) and without having the distraction of European games, I thought Liverpool would get back into the top 4 this season.
I'm sure the new players will gel and the team will improve (although 35m for Carroll still seems absurd but then so was 50m for Torres) but it seems we could already be hearing 'next season' in the near future.
I thought they stood a chance, but not as good as most people make out. When you look at their signings over the past year:
Torres replaced with Carroll - definite step down imo given Torres was still scoring in his final season at 'pool
Aquilani replaced with Adam - no real improvement there
Meireles replaced with Henderson - another step down. Meireles may have fitness issues, but he contributed far more to the team imo
So the only real improvements are Suarez, Enrique, Coates and Downing.
Of those, Suarez is a great player but with temperament and consistency issues. As KPR loves to point out, he can "take the piss" out of six opposing players, but can also miss from eight yards out when the team is 1-0 down
Enrique is a definite improvement, and I'm amazed that Liverpool only signed him as a ready made defender given the injury issues for Aurelio and Agger and the fact Carragher is definitely getting on a bit.
Coates is likely to be great in the future, but maybe not what Liverpool need right here and now
Downing is a good player who will contribute, but without a striker who is prolific at converting crosses his impact won't be truly felt
Imo Liverpool are now no better than Spurs or Arsenal - all three have good teams but all have weaknesses that need to be addressed if they are to make top 4 a certainty. So 4th place is likely to be decided by whoever copes with those weaknesses best, or addresses them in January.
