But they don't do they? Now you have gone from our fans being "passive" to the antithesis of willfully trying to put players off. We are where we are because of decisions made by owners/chairman, managing directors, and players. To say it is the fans fault we are in the Third division is not only incredible it is also insulting to SAFC fans, who must be the loyalest fans in English football considering what they have had to endure for a decade.

I love things like this mate, they lived the mood and bring everyone together.

No matter what people say, excitement and energy is infectious.

I went to Chicago recently to go to a Bulls game, was a bucket list thing for me. The fan engagement was absolutely incredible. Things that involve them, separate things for each corner, even some cheesy bits like ‘if your from east side make some noise’ etc but I tell you the place was absolutely buzzing throughout.

They are going through a really tough few years but the pace was packed it was vibrant and you could literally see the players appreciated it.

I know Liverpool are a marmite club, but I look at their fans and they are utterly incredible. The noise, the songs, then unstinting loyalty and support. Absolute pride in their team and city.

I know a few scouse lads and they are the only lads who have anywhere near the love for their club in the way I see from us and Newcastle, but they project it in such a different way.

I know they’ve a lot more to shout about than us, they have a sensational team to excite them, but I’d just love to see us getting back to what we were always great at. We didn’t play top division football for many years at Roker but it was always vibrant, even with the smaller crowds. We have it in us.

We all enjoy the match more with an atmosphere, I guarantee every one of us has had multiple conversations over drinks after ‘was buzzing in there today’.

It absolutely projects to the players, how could it not?

It's a hypothetical situation I'm suggesting I thought that was obvious. I think you know that it would affect the players thus making the point that fans can make a difference for better or for worse.

I could hypothesise that if one of these many clubs that are more supportive than us had our players instead of their own players their results would be exactly the same. <laugh>

You're right about that, I've personally never suggested it's something unique to Sunderland fans if anything I've praised them for still going. Doesn't change the fact the atmosphere is flat and if it wasn't we'd be doing better.

It's almost a bit insulting to say that the fans have zero effect on a team, why do we bother going then? If supporting a team is only a financial thing we might as well pay a fee every year to the club and stay at home with our feet up.

Fans are irrelevant financially these days. Look at Bournemouth signing players for £20m. Our crowds are treble theirs and we can't afford to buy a player for £60m. We bother going to watch the match, if the football served up is exciting it will get fans up on their feet and singing. Watching a turgid 1-1 draw against the likes of Fleetwood is not as exciting as Allardyce's win versus Chelsea it really is as simple as that.

No amount of encouragement/ support would get this team playing well. Bad manager with bad players using bad tactics

There's no getting through to that lad mate it's like chatting to a garden gnome. The concept of supporting a team and the reason for doing so is alien to him.

I support my team and have been to over 50 football grounds to support them, never once have I scored a goal, made a last ditch tackle or a miraculous save. Players do that not supporters.

I would venture to suggest that if you had the misfortune to watch yesterday match, when a very poor team was lucky not to lose to just a poor team. When it took over 30 mins to have a shot on goal..then after the match our manager came out and whinged on about the ref ( who was as per usual hopeless)

You might judge that being negative is really just being honest...if I do not turn out on Tuesday...it could mean that I have reached a sad point... in over 60 years of supporting Sunderland.. it is so sad and depressing watching them atm.

You'd think as someone who goes to watch us at away games you'd realise how important the role of a vocal support is. Straight over your head though.

Vocal support can not make a bad player make better passes, tackles or shots on goal, the old chestnut of you can't make a silk purse out of a pig's ear. The players are ****, that is not the fault of supporters, they do not scout, sign, train and pick these players for the team.

I've just watched M.o.D. and a Bournemouth player gesticulated to the crowd, urging them to get behind the team as they tried to get an equaliser towards the end of their match against Wolves . . . . I've got no idea why he would do that :emoticon-0136-giggl

The atmosphere yesterday was as bad as the worst home games of the Moyes season. I do think it's a bit of a chicken and egg thing to some degree because we were pap, but equally it's not is it? Because we have the capability to buy better players in January and really we should have in the summer too. That would lift the fans and get the positivity back quite quickly.

Considering how much effect "supportive" fans can have on actual game play and given that our supporters are evidently lacking in this respect, maybe we shouldn't be looking for new players in January after all. We should sign some "supportive" fans as this is the missing ingredient we lack to make us into a winning team.
