Yeah better by boat than by the white knuckle ride along the road. Capri is like the Robin Hood's Bay of Italy, worth a day trip at best, too crowded and nowhere to park.
My dad was in the navy and saw Vesuvius erupting during WW2. Obviously never got to the top of there but made it to the top of Mount Etna when they were in Sicily. Played at was then Napoli’s stadium for the navy against an Italian side in a match supposed to foster friendship but was not exactly played in that spirit.

The power of nature is awesome. And frightening. My dad was on his ship in the bay and said it was fascinating to watch the lava, especially at night, slowly but inexorably progressing. Thankfully from a safe distance.
