0.40am: Liverpool make £71m Nicolas Pepe bid
Liverpool have made a £71million offer for Nicolas Pepe, it has been claimed.

Sport journalist Nicolo Schira claims a five-year deal has now been put forward to the Ivory Coast international.

Manchester United and Arsenal have both been linked with the Lille ace.

Schira tweeted: “#Liverpool want to close Nicolas [HASHTAG]#Pepe[/HASHTAG]. [HASHTAG]#Klopp[/HASHTAG] has offered €80M to [HASHTAG]#Lille[/HASHTAG] and for him a contract until 2024 (€3M plus bonus at year). [HASHTAG]#transfers[/HASHTAG] #LFC”
Pepe has 35 goals in 74 league appearances for the Ligue 1 club.
According to a report from the media, Tottenham are lining up a £40 million summer bid for Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake, but Liverpool should be challenging their Champions League final opponents for the Dutchman's signature.

The 24-year-old joined the Cherries from Chelsea in the summer of 2017 for around £20 million according to BBC Sport, and he has since gone on to establish himself as one of the Premier League's finest central defenders.

And Ake has all the attributes needed to be a success at Liverpool.

If we bought a forward, could Bobby be deployed as a midfielder? Could he be that creative force that we’ve been looking for? He plays a fulse 9 anyway....and was an AM when we bought him.....could he be the AM some of think we need? His pressing is perfect, his engine is good, he creates space, can receive on the half turn....

Just thinking out loud....
Hmmm, I'm not sure. His passing is off sometimes - it seems to be the first thing to go when his form dips. The press and all the hard work off the ball remains but the creative side slips a little.

Yes, that’s a fair remark - I’m not advocating it, just thinking of options....imagine, for example if we went out and bought someone like Griezmann, a world class finisher.....what would we do with Bobby? Chances are very slim that Klopp would change anything up top tbh but I like to theorise <laugh>

Pepe at 70-80 million isn't coming to sit on our bench for half the season. If we change formation to accommodate him, then our midfield options becomes even tougher to pick from. Draxler is being offered around this summer and could be a slightly cheaper alternative to Pepe and probably more likely to accept a rotational squad position. There's also Fekir being hawked around again this summer and our interest is still there, but it'll be hard to negotiate with Lyon after we screwed them around last season - we may well end up over paying on what they want to get him. I know a few have mentioned Werner as pretty much done, but a fella I follow who's very on the pulse with what's going on isn't aware of any formal conversations 'yet' between the clubs or agents.

Aside from Werner as the more likely pick, I'd not be surprised if our signings are all relatively unknown, young or old players - i.e. no one expensive, well known or in their prime.

Fekir at £15m, if that is even remotely true, is as much a no-brainer as Shaqiri last season. I know you mostly get what you pay for (he says, contradicting himself), but Pepe at £70m? Really? Well better than chucking £50m down the toilet on Depay, I suppose.*

^ Though I did think spending £35m on Salah was ludicrous at the time. :emoticon-0111-blush

Agreed. Bobby could play at the head of a diamond (so could Shaqiri, imho) , but you wouldn't put him in a three-man midfield.

We have a lot of games next year plus the fact that we have a fair few players at international tournaments this summer.

We badly need an attacker who can rotate with the front 3 without a drop in a quality. Which is why I won’t be surprised if we splash big money. Pepe looks the business and seems to suit us stylistically. Can play out wide or centrally.

but wide right... not wide left maybe?

I don't really care it just doesn't look logical.

Shaqiri was a bargain...but what if we’d bought Maddison instead? Could we have nabbed a bigger bargain? I agree with previous poster(s)....the more I think about it, the more I think that we’ll opt for up and coming lads rather than big names.

yes and no

in hindsight given how little injuries we had up top and origi coming in yes maddison would have been cool. but he wasn't going to be reserve for salah etc.

Sadly, I really don't think it's possible to get a replacement without a drop in quality for our forward three. Anyone we could buy would be mega money and there's no way the club can spend that kind of money for a rotation player. We're not City. Even City can't really buy that way given Mahrez, Jesus and Sane all want out - they don't like rotation and can't keep them all happy.
