I just bumped into an old mate I haven't seen for ages on the way to work.

I asked him what's up to these days.

He said "I'm feeding piss heads, the homeless and druggies. I help the dregs of society get something to eat"

I said "You working in a shelter?"

"No, Weatherspoons!"

It means a lot.

I know 'beaucoup' means a lot, but why? Why doesn't it mean 'a fashionable young man who suddenly and violently seizes power from a government'?
