This is the problem. It's system creep. It's an extension of smart motorways which are so saturated with cameras that a driver can't scratch his balls without having it recorded on a dozen videos

It's the policy I dislike, and if the EU were to impose it on the UK against parliamentary will, then there would be an issue with the EU.

You've said you thought the UK Parliament would bring it in anyway. You may be right, in which case it ceases to be an EU issue (even though it appears to have originated there).

At the risk of sounding like Ellers, I think this policy is aimed at countries like France whose populace still drive around as if they're on a race track. The UK's road safety record is remarkably good because generally we exercise good judgement, consideration and restraint

Please never paste a copy of this rag on here again... it’s shameful and a sad reflection on what the sheep are fed ... thankfully the readership of this paper are on their way out

    Head for the light Mutton

As for the Sun I have just been told by my phone that the U.K. is set for artic temperatures before enjoying 3 months heat wave

All these journalists and the TV presentation need major reform ... yes you don’t need to watch read or listen but these are the people that need to be accountable imo . It has ruined the U.K. culture and continue to do so

That is rubbish re French driving it has been a total revolution in the last five years
Drivers do not speed anymore so harsh is the penalties nowadays plus drivers don’t even cross solid white lines anymore . All villages throughout France have traffic calming coming watch and see

The culture of French driving has changed massively and within the next few years they would of completely changed the safety rating of the country... they already make and have invented the safest cars in the world and in two years or so will be the safest country to drive in the world. They already have the best roads it’s just a matter of time

    Germany is a different story

Well, sounds like France is moving in the right direction, which is good news DT. The stats show that France, Belgium, Iceland, Austria and Italy still have high road deaths. Worse than those are Greece, Poland, Portugal and Slovenia. Czech Republic is a death trap and as for Slovakia, if you drive to the shops, you have a 50/50 chance of making it back alive (slight exaggeration)

25,000 people a year die in road traffic accidents across Europe, 1700 of them in the UK (where we have another 25,000 serious injuries, and 140,000 other injuries). This policy is aimed at reducing those numbers. I assume it would also free up police time currently spent on manning speed traps and attending RTAs (though it might reduce police income through fines). As someone gradually reducing the number of points on my license by driving relatively sensibly for a few years, I would welcome the impossibility of getting any more and the removal of ugly speed cameras.

In my experience the quality of driving in the UK has deteriorated hugely. We are also the insurance fraud capital of Europe, with more than twice the level of whiplash claims than France, Spain or the Netherlands.

I would like to see some kind of evidence that the technology will actually reduce accidents though.

Having driven in Italy for a few years I suspect this policy won’t go down well, where driving is seen as some kind of mechanised bullfight.

Quite right about fraud in the road traffic system now and non payment of road tax etc Driving has become expensive and in low income areas, people have decided to take risk of no insurance or tax (or even, in some cases, driving licence).

I think having in car regulators is overkill from what I see. I very rarely see police manned speed traps. Most speed cameras I approve of. We have one at the bottom of the hill leading into our village. It ensures that cars don't gain momentum and whizz through the village at 50 mph. It has contributed to safety by reminding perfectly law abiding drivers to regulate speed.

Interesting point about Italy. The EU has to take people with it.

The rate of signatures is clearly slowing down and a long way from being meaningful when compared with the referendum turnout, Paul. I'm guessing that the reason there's nothing similar of note for the Brexit voters is because they already cast their vote at the polling station.

Despite the noisy clamour for a second referendum and the marches in London, I still believe that the majority of British people are respectful of democracy and object to being bullied. It would not surprise me to see a second referendum actually deliver a higher majority in favour of Brexit. The issue isn't so much leaving the EU, but the manner by which we do so. If it had been handled more competently we'd be on our way.

    Tom Newton Dunn

One pro-deal Tory backbencher tells me he won't vote at all tonight, because none of the 16 options appeal to him. Says quite a few like him. A Tory mass abstention is the big flaw to the Letwin plan, as will mean any consensus is impossible to identify.

Agree totally I am not putting any faith into any petition it’s just very interesting to watch the flow rate . I respected the vote and no problem leaving the EU for myself ... if there is a second vote which because the importance then that gets my equal respect either way

I believe however if there is a second vote we will see a 60/40 result to remain purely based on the acceptance of facts and the journey we have all been on in three years . I do not believe that the 16m remain vote will decrease in anyway I cannot see that ... I can only see that figure or percentage increase base wise. Hence I believe if it happens it will be a very large swing to revoke and remain

I base my opinion on any leave campaign to be difficult to convince the electorate that there is a post Brexit plan or vision

Scotland and NI figures will be larger and most uK cities also

The no deal thing on both sides is dead as dead and the EU will win that game of poker anyway such is the weak governance of the U.K.

Either way the divide will still be there and any idiot today who seriously thinks a no deal will be fine at last is looked upon as a minority... that’s how far we have become ... look at the petition for that as a current indicator even if it’s just a petition

You would expect a similar surge for no deal now but it’s not happening on the same platform an anyone see that ?

    He’s not wrong is he?
We may get European status for those who want it
    That’s the easiest solution imo
European visas for those who wish to travel would stop the immigration

We're there already. If you haven't been caught yet you will be soon unless you are lucky enough not to have a smart motorway near you. I got done almost 3 years ago on an empty M1 travelling South near Nottingham at 62 mph keeping pace and a very healthy distance behind the vehicle in front in the middle lane. no danger to anybody as we were all behaving ourselves in a responsible way including a GP who now lives in my village. She was doing 61. The reason being that the variable speed limit was 60 at that time. They must have been coining it at the time.
