I heard Farage, who really is becoming a florid snowflake, going on about this on the wireless this morning. He was claiming that Russia had influenced the petition (which did happen with a previous one). He might well be right, The Kremlin has a lot of fun doing whatever it can to destabilise and sow discord in western democracies. The impressive thing is that 27 leaders of 27 countries plus those from the EU institutions with different and sometimes contradictory objectives can still thrash something out over a few hours. Because they understand, even people like Orban, that compromise is essential. If they can do it why can’t the UK cabinet, the Tory Party etc etc. No need to answer, I have a hunch I might know why.

He just taken leadership of the Brexit Party. He could build that into a powerful force if Brexit is denied, and the Tories must be very aware of this. So too Labour, who could lose their support in the North of England, just as they lost their support in Scotland
