Even now he is well regarded at the European club where he was a manager - as one of the originators of 'Total Football'. He was manager of them for a total of 24 years in 3 spells of management - which were interrupted by war. Also national team manager for a year, at the same time. Also had managerial spells at 2 other clubs from the same city, which either no longer exist, or are now amateurs.
Rather surprisingly the club has had 7 English managers during its long history, though only one ex Hornet.

Total football gave it away, so I looked on the Ajax Wikipedia page - it was Jack Reynolds, who played for us in one season, 1907-08. He was manager there 1915–1925, 1928–1940, and 1945–1947.

<applause> All yours Barry. He was also manager of the Netherlands national team in 1919. The first spell at Ajax was made possible through the country being neutral in World War 1. Take it away.

Must be QPArselona then

Hercules was Stepto's horse
All yours Dave. QPR were well known nomads in their earlier years and had played at 18 different home stadiums before settling briefly at the White City and then finally at the 'Load of Rust' stadium. These included playing at Wormwood Scrubs and at the Royal Horticultural Society ! Over to you !

Thanks Cologne.

As a young man, a now well known author ,enjoyed country walks along the banks of a river.

When he started writing.,the walks he enjoyed influenced his chosen pen name.

Who might this be?
