Just looking for any in case the wife wants to go shopping in Hull and I need somewhere to take refuge.

There was an independent coffee shop on King Edward Street briefly, but it was next door to Costa and no one went in.

I think Castro's right that the megachains will always win that battle.

Was in the Brecon Beacons a few weeks ago. Quite the opposite - Costa dead and the independent was absolutely heaving.

Same in Cotswolds, Dorset, Hampshire. Tends to be larger cities or towns where chains predominate. Strange as the coffee in independents is far superior.

If you are out that way the cafe at Fimber on the way to York takes some beating for scones, cakes and sandwiches. Unbelievably cheap prices. Pleasantly situated in a wooded area which used to be a railway station. Always busy in finer weather. Popular with bikers and vintage car enthusiasts. Only sells instant coffe but at £1 a mug is alright.

We sometimes have a ride out to Whitby for haddock and chips at Trenchers; the cafe at Fimber never fails to lure us in on the way up there - the quality coffee for only a quid per mug is brilliant.

I would recommend having something to eat there, even if it is only some cake. Always rated Magpie more than Trenchers but a friend of mine, who sadly passed away earlier this year, always said the best fish and chips in Whitby are at Hadley's. I think he could be right.
