The OP makes a valid point for discussion and does not deserve abuse for it. I was once badly beaten up outside a pub, luckily I just had a few bumps and brusies and a swollen head. That incident, which was not really too much to do with me (my mate owed a pub landlord some money and started mouthing off when the landlord told him to piss off out the pub until he coughed up, we were both set upon and I was too pissed to get away) Certainly made me reconsider some of my actions around pubs and clubs, as my old man used to say "you dont know who you're getting involved with". There are a few nutters out there, who turn into animals when they've had a belly full of beer. After my incident I always tried to pull mates away from trouble or nip it in the bud, before it got out of hand.............
Im sad to hear that. The point i put forward (i wasnt arguing for or against, just putting it forward) before the haters dismissed it was whether there would now be some kind of conflict or ill feeling between him and Barnard. So after you were assaulted do you think you could go into work a week later and spend a considerable amount of time around someone who had (allegedly) done the same to someone else? Or would it not be a problem?
It was 28 years ago, so the memory is a bit hazy. I do know that I blamed the guy (my mate) who caused most of the trouble , the landlord of the pub who got some locals to sort us out, and more especially the Police, or the higher up officers. The ones who dealt with me at the incident wanted the book thrown at all involved, but in the end no further action was taken. In those days it was down to senior police officers and not the CPS whether charges were brought, and they dissmissed it as a "pub fight". From that moment on whenever my mates tried a "Johnny Concrete" act in a club, I tried to calm things down. It does just make you stop and think. I still went on the piss and sometimes drank too much (and still do) but seemed to devolop a 6th sense for trouble.
So how would you have felt about going into work the next week with someone who had allegedly done what someone had done to you to someone else?
Both incidents obviously unrelated but does beg the question is it wise to frequent the places that these things tend to attract. Ordinary Joe can get hiself into enough trouble let alone high profile people in the community some people like to see them around but sadly many resent them so the risk is high either way you can end up in court or hospital which has been the outcome for these two respectivly. Young guys like this would generally have fairly big egos which i can understand due to the fact that on match days they have 20 000 plus people generally singing thier praises its no surprise that egos can then get out of control. As we know night clubs can be dodgy places with no shortage of less fortunate people ready to enhance thier own reputations in a less positive way. The only way to aviod such situations is to not put yourself in such a position but its easier said than done. Going to the original point i dont think it will affect the relation ship beetween them they have been teamates for a while and one of our assets is the way they seem bonded as a group but i suspect the Don may be raising an eyebrow about the way the players spend thier time away from the football stadium as whoever is to blame or not to blame its not good news for the individuals or the club in general
I think the main effect when something like this happens would be in terms of the victim's wariness and behaviour, as LD rightly says, in future situations. I don't think it really impacts on your feelings towards someone you've known a while unless of course they're an aggressive so-and-so the whole time, in which case you'd be pretty unlikely to have all that much time for them in the first place. Although I didn't quite get my head round the original posting at first, I do sympathise with your point re getting leapt upon for offering an opinion. The same was true when I dared suggest that players shouldn't be tired after 4 games of a season.......
