Diego Maradona is the second best player i have seen. Pele is the best by a length of the football pitch. Common to both is that they have a IQ of a pelican. During the active years and after that Pele however has been like a model citizen compared to that cokenose of idiot. Pele was a bit a hero to me as i was a young boy but then he has open his mouth too many times and too stupidly in interwiews. There is a reason why he never coached Brazilian national team. Maradona otherhand was Argentinas manager for short period and that was a thing i never understand. During his command german gave a tactical lesson to argentina in WC 2006 and for that otherwise great argentinan team and the nation that was a shock and diego armando had to go. His behaviour during his active years and coachin time was sickening and now its just sad...

Though if you included the first bit of the search in Wiktionary you would get

    Dago may refer to:

    • Dago, an ethnic slur referring to Italians and people of Italian origin or ethnicity and sometimes Spaniards and the Portuguese (derived from the common Spanish name Diego)

If you really believe Maradona was an average player, as well as being a card carrying twat, I can safely disregard all of your opinions on football.

Ok, l’m in a good mood, l’ll offer just this once........” he was above average in footballing skill” ........ but nothing more.

Truth is, l just don’t like him.

Well that is a far more understandable criticism. He is deeply unlikeable, a man you would wish to avoid being in company with at all costs, but in an odd way I feel sorry for him.

when you are asked who the greatest player you ever saw was it's very much a generation thing. You can't really comment on players you never saw. But it does stagger me when Man. Utd. fans, who are old enough to have seen both, rate Cantona over Best.

Yeah, I know. Didn’t suit my argument. So ‘dago’ is no more derogatory than somebody from the IOW calling a mainlander a grockle.

There's something in this. I was absolutely astonished to see that some ratings had placed David Beckham higher than Johann Cruyff on the all time ratings list. For me Cruyff was the greatest. Not just because of his footballing skills but because he represented a whole football philosophy - which is still alive today. I was about 11 at the time of the 66 World Cup, and things which happen at that age make a special impression, so Eusebio would also be high on that list. My parents both said that Ferenc Puskas and Alfredo di Stefano were the best, but how can I comment on that ?

It's not really fair to compare directly the footballers of yesteryear to those of a more modern game. Football and society has changed dramatically, most importantly with speed and general fitness. What was important 50 years ago may not be anywhere near as important today.

Maradonna was a great footballer with an iffy temperament and was and is a horrible ****. Anyway we all know the greatest player of all time was Devon White.

I agree about not comparing. The players of today are probably faster and fitter (and more theatrical) but there are very few great teams around these days, particularly at the international level.
