Nobody ever lost a world cup due to an empty swimming pool.

I make Capello right about England ....players always have an excuse...hotel too remote, can't have butter on our bread, no ketchup etc

Well it used to be but they dont have to worry about prepari ng again.
24 teams again in the next Euros and Scotland won't be one of them..

Is it fair to say they had some quality players at a time when most of the world was still asleep?

What was England '78 quals like? I remember reading up about it a few years back and it seemed unlucky rather than ****, lost out on GD to Italy.

Funny, I don't really remember the 78 qualifying campaign. Which is strange cos I lived and breathed watching and playing football at the time.

I remember the 74 campaign much better. The Poland game with the clown Tomaszewski is etched in my mind like it was yesterday. It was the day I realised that life is essentially a cruel joke and that we are all going to die sometime and that the Universe doesn't give a **** about you and is ruled by chance and indifference, and that good things don't happen just because you want them to.



If I was anyway impressed by counseling, that game would have cost me thousands over my lifetime.

It wasn't a question of being unlucky. Simply not putting enough away against the teams we should have done, whilst the Italians did enough. Not helped by Revie's antics part way through the campaign either.

Here's a good World Cup wheeze that you can try at home should you be so inclined.

I've just tried it out in the Serbia V Switzerland game and it's amused me no end.


Basically, if your Missus is in the room (or anyone else who knows **** all about football) then shout out random phrases mixed with astute comment and see what you can get away with.


So I started with 'Ey up Referee, that was miles offside'.

Then went with 'Kinnell, ya bugger. Handbags. Penalty? Weasal knackers!


That ilicited no response so I upped the ante.


"Away referee, that was mortal"

"Get in Stoma bag. Up the Soccaroos!"


Nothing.


"Square ball. Hit the toes. Biggin Hill. Fortune!!!"

This got an irritated tut.


"Nice cakes. Up it! Up it! Up it! Focus group ejeculate! Monster code red!!!"



She twigged at this point and said 'Ernie, stop being a twat.'




Easier said than done.

France and Spain weren’t ‘woke’ back then.
Fewer teams in those days – only 16 in 1974
European teams: GER, GDR, SCO, SWE, HOL, YUG, BUL, ITA,POL.
This was the WC where Adidas made their name with their trefoil emblem on several shirts like HOL, URU,SWE, ARG, ZAI, BUL and POL, although strangely not GER.
Cruyff wore two stripe Adidas, ever the contrarian.
SCO (white shirts)and AUST were in Umbro.
All this captured in the magnificent FIFA book of the tournament ‘ WORLD CUP 74’ full of outstanding photography, layout by Willy Fleckhaus and match reports from the likes of David Miller and Brian Glanville. Currently on ebay for a tenner. One of the best ten football books ever published.

They brought out a similar book ‘WORLD CUP 78’ in same format, again with Fleckhaus and Glanville.

Two of the best WCs I reckon, I’ve got the official films on VHS...no idea why FIFA don’t release them on DVD.
I was still in short pants when we got knocked out in 70, and by the time 82 came round, I’d been on dole for over a year. 12 years of prime WC activity missed out on.
Anyone remember a well-known City fan in HDM on the end of the Guardia Civile’s savagery?

I remember seeing a large lad from Hull getting battered on the news,as they left a bar. Nothing to do with football, despite the inference it was, it was over a row about being overcharged. He supports Liverpool andcalways has done. Though that is where his family were from. His dad and brother used to go to City. His brother has nothing to do with City now, a KR fan who supports Liverpool.

Spain was allied with the Argies (or so it was reckoned) so plenty of hostility towards Bulldog Bobby at the time.

France was supplying Exocets to the Argies too.

We were even getting lectured at the Eurovision Song contest with "Ein bißchen Frieden" by some German lass.

I was one of Maggie's Millions, although of course she'd only got elected because of Labour's catastrophic government.

Plew sa chonge as the French would say.

FA Chairman Greg Clarke is sad that there are not more England fans in Russia, well if you hadn't told them what a bad and dangerous place it is maybe more would have gone there.

At least he is pleased it turned out "a bit better" than expected.
