Some cities like Dresden & Warsaw were rebuilt to their original plans, others got new Stalinist Architecture. Brutal.
I recently watched an excellent Dan Cruickshank documentary about the rebuilding of Warsaw (he'd lived there as a small boy in the early 1950s). Many of the original plans had been hidden in a local monastery during the war and, where plans didn't exist, old paintings and photographs were used as the basis for reconstruction. The key point was that a great deal of the work in the city's ancient centre was undertaken by citizens who volunteered their time, skills and labour to the project with whole families spending their weekends and holidays contributing.

Hamburg is a nice city ,though the Reeperbahn is dodgy, was when I was there about 30 years ago...Maybe its been cleaned up since.

I went there in 1963. Quite a shock for a 13 year old who had only known our country, which at that time was drab and grey and everywhere was shut by about 10.30pm. Lennon said that he thought Liverpool was a rough, tough city full of hard men and dodgy people but he had a rude awakening when they got to Hamburg.

I like it but don't think it's real. Banky's spacial awareness is excellent and i don't think he would have sprayed it in the middle of the wall, he'd have sprayed it with the girl and bird at floor level, I'd love to be proved wrong though
