What's the most Celtic will be willing to pay him? 20k-25k tops? Sounds like the lad wants his money one way or the other. Nobody is going to pay 35k a week for him, so if we do ship him out we could well still be paying the bulk of his wages for the next year and a half. :(
Ouch!

If only in the game of football we could have performance managed him out, he would have been gone within the first 12mths. He just has no ambition and is content on taking a HUGE wage and gives nothing in return.

Sunderland are willing to cut their losses and grant Jack Rodwell a free transfer after the top earner asked to leave the club - but he won’t get a pay-off, the Echo understands.

The Echo has learned that Sunderland informed the wantaway midfielder almost two weeks ago that he could leave as a free agent, but he wouldn’t receive any kind of payoff.

Cash-strapped Sunderland are yet to hear back from the midfielder or his representatives.

Rodwell earns £70,000 a week, has 18-months left on his Sunderland contract, has barely played this season, and the Echo understands that he has made it clear that he doesn’t see his future on Wearside.

It remains to be seen whether the former Everton and Man City midfielder has played his last game for the club.

If Rodwell departs it would free up a huge chunk of wages with Sunderland accepting that there is little prospect of selling the midfielder, who is taking up a significant part of the wage bill.

Rodwell was the only player from last season’s squad not to have their weekly pay packet cut by 40 per cent following relegation, yet the 26-year-old has made just three first team appearances this season, because of injury.

Chris Coleman’s midfield options have been decimated in recent weeks, but he hasn’t been able to call upon Rodwell, who has been nursing a hamstring complaint, since taking charge.

Speaking last month, Coleman said that it was up to Rodwell to prove that he had the appetite for the Championship relegation battle, and made it clear that he needs to play more football.

Coleman, speaking in December, said: "We need players here with an appetite who want to play football. Ability wise, it is never in question with Jack. He has to play more football. I don’t care how he does it, he just needs to be on the pitch more. That will be up to Jack."

Sunderland signed Rodwell for £10million in 2014, but he has been unable to reproduce the form of his early career under a string of different managers.

Rodwell was booed by his own supporters in the home defeat to Sheffield United in September, and hasn’t played for the first team since the 3-0 EFL Cup defeat to Everton later that month.

He has featured twice for the U21s in the Checkatrade Trophy in an attempt to reinvent himself as a centre back.

Rodwell is the latest player to express a desire to leave Sunderland, who prop up the Championship table.

Lewis Grabban returned to parent club AFC Bournemouth at the start of the month, while James Vaughan was sold to Wigan Athletic.

Both Lamine Kone and Watford loan target Didier Ndong - sent off in the 4-0 humiliation at Cardiff City - have also informed the club’s hierarchy that they see their futures elsewhere.
All scum bag rats jumping a sinking ship; that they caused. Good riddance to the lot of them,, Give me young hungry players with passion..

Take his shirt off him
He gets no more games let him rot
Keep him here working every day

Ohh I forgot no more free medical help
He is just faining injury
Give him nowt
Suffer the lose we can we can get no worse
Everyone in the club should send him to Coventry so to speak.. Basically let him turn up, and give him no medical help; just ignore him... But if he's paid by the club make him turn up everyday and do nothing

Maybe have a fan protest game with placards and all the bollocks that would go with it. I'm sure this would catch on big time with other clubs as well who have players in similar situations....it will highlight what has gone wrong with the game. Nobody would deny these guys a good salary but when your getting 3.5 million a year for sitting on your f*cking ass something needs to be done. There is player power but I think on this fan power might be bigger.....

I agree, I don't know what exactly but it feels like something should be done about it because that 70K a week could be crucial to our survival yet this dickhead is taking it from us and giving us nothing.

It seems putting this out in public like Coleman has started to do is the way to go.....basically shaming him into making a decision....hopefully that he moves on. You see footballers kissing their badge....this guy should start and kiss the fans' arses....for what we have funded him to do. It comes down to making a decision on dignity and respect....or making a decision based on pure greed. If the lad played like Defoe and gave the same to the club as Defoe did I would have no problem with what he got paid but this is just taking the p*ss.......

I have no beef with Rodwell. None at all.

He was an exciting signing and I for one thought we did well to attract him.

He's injury prone and has been rubbish since he got here. Is it his fault that we offered him £60-70k a week? Should he have said "actually I don't think I'm worth that" or would anyone on here do that if they were offered stupid money for what they do?

If you were on the end of the abuse he has been would you not want to leave?

Surely the club are to blame for this idiocy not the player? Most on here thought he was a very good signing. He hasn't worked and has had loads of injuries. Not exactly hus fault.

I hope he goes. He's been an absolute disaster. But one of SAFC's making not Rodwell's

Well I question his commitment, ethic and work rate so I'll have a few kilos of beef with the oxygen thief.

What he's paid isn't his fault. The fact that he's been injured a lot probably isn't his fault. The fact that he didn't play in a winning side for God knows how long isn't his fault. But his attitude has been called into question and his questionable attitude is his fault. If you had his undoubted talent wouldn't you want to make more of yourself? When he looks back on his career he might be a multi-millionaire but he'll have to look himself in the mirror everyday and know that he didn't achieve what he could have done.
