It was. Bit of a trick one really - from memory, it was first sung to him after he left the club. He was assistant manager at Rotherham when we went there in 1968 - we were struggling for goals at the time (pre-Barry Endean) & he had been a popular player. It became a very popular song with the away regulars even after Endean came onto the scene.

Very true - and neither does it mention the issue of 'no room at the inn', nor that of the birth having to take place in a stable. It's funny what our kids get force fed with...

You are of course perfectly right Theo - why do we consider ourselves as not belonging to the animal Kingdom ? Surely this is a type of speciesism - and why 'Kingdom', surely this is a bit sexist ? The three wise men never actually attended the birth, only arriving well after the event - possibly as a result of journeying via British Rail.
The shepherds, on the other hand, were certainly in the vicinity - but apparently found him in a manger in a house (house sharing with one's animals being in vogue back then). This too suggests that they weren't present at the birth - as he apparently was born in a cave.
Will grudgingly give you Mary & Joseph, but I have my doubts about both - I mean, virgin birth? Come on...
Well anyway, I've seen our grandson's nativity play and there were sheep (he was a particularly impressive example!), cows, a donkey, a cat and a dog...not to mention miscellaneous humans. If his teacher says that's how it was, I'm not arguing. She's a formidable woman...
Mrs H says that in Luke it says she gave birth to her first born son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room (though the original Greek can also mean upper room) in the inn. I'm not arguing with her
She does say the business about going to Bethlehem is fiction and included only because the OT says he would be born in the City of David. They were Nazerenes so they'd have no reason to go Bethlehem for a census for which there's no historical evidence at all.
And I've just directed/choreographed one which had lambs, a donkey and camels along with numerous angels, numerous dancing stars, a talking star, talking snowflakes and a very disgruntled, talking snowman. And behold, suddenly many dragons came out of the cave … Then the Lord, even though he was not yet two years old, roused himself, got to his feet, and stood in front of them. And the dragons worshipped him. When they finished worshipping him, they went away … So too both lions and leopards were worshipping him and accompanying him in the desert … showing them the way and being subject to them; and bowing their heads with great reverence they showed their servitude by wagging their tails.
Although I suspect the kids would have loved it...
All very confusing really - in Matthew's gospel they were already living in Bethlehem, but Luke went into great detail about a journey to Bethlehem.
