Not sure what the Spanish Govounmet are so worried about, the Catalansand can vote all they like but it's meaningless if the government just ignore it.

This really says a lot about democracy and the EU. This goes deeper than a vote for independence.

Over 300 hurt in Catalonia.

The Spanish government are totally ****ing this up. The majority of Catalans would have voted no to independence, now they are being treated The way Franco treated them. Could get very messy indeed. Also makes Cameron’s approach to Scottish independence almost statesmanlike.

It’s not just Spain as the Catalonia region also includes a lot of France
To a point where I live there are Road signs in both French and Catalan

The guardian civil have always been and continue today to be cowardly bully bastards, Madrid will pay for this

The World has gone bonkers. Or at least far too many of our political leaders have.

Shocking scenes in Barcelona. Cops punching women in the head that were protesting peacefully. Let's see on what side Herr Junckers comes down. An EU army may be needed to put down this monstrous referendum by Catalonia's civilians in their own country

Change the record Goldie, this would have happened regardless of the EU.

It would, and I look forward to seeing the EU's support for the Catalans over this inexcusable state violence
Inexcusable state violence is correct but I'm far from convinced the organisors of the Catalan vote are blameless either today. They must have expected these injuries and could have postponed the vote and tried talking, but chose political gain over the safety of the voters instead.

EU conspicuously silent on this...

You mean the organisers must have expected inexcusable violence by the state police by encouraging people to express themselves and vote peacefully?

It was advisory. An opinion poll. Why shouldn't we see how people feel once they know what it actually means?

Oh dear imaginary God in his imaginary heaven...............an opinion poll?!!
It was a referendum that the government said would be implemented. Move on!!

I think everyone expected this after the response from Madrid a couple of days ago. The vote was ruled illegal, was going to be stopped, and the Catalan vote leaders are not blind to how Spain's security forces would do that!

I don't think the Catalan leaders should have backed down in the face of state violence, particularly as deadly force was unlikely. And it was politically astute. The world will have sympathy with the Catalans, second only to the Rohingyas. Madrid has made several rods for its own back.
