Shevchenko didn't need a scouting record to show his talent, £30m later and Chelsea regretted not staying English. Though that said, they stayed English (league, anyway) when they threw £50m at Torres and he's not setting the league on fire just yet.

Looking at the deals on more successful strikers from last season, Danny Graham £3.5m and Steve Morison £2.8m, then £6m does seem steep, the only deal at anything like that was Shane Long at £4.5m(with the potential to rise to £6m), but he's better than Rodriguez.

I'm in a position to help you out though, I can sort you a deal for Aaron Mclean for £1.3m(which is all we paid for him), I can ever drop him off tomorrow. And I'll buy you all lunch. How about it? :emoticon-0112-wonde

Hmm... I'll tell you what, you give us £1.3m and we'll take McLean.

De Ridder will be a rough diamond. He isnt quite fit enough yet and certainally not English match fit but we have seen signs of what he can do and there will be a few full backs this season in need of changing their shorts at half time!

completely agree. i think it is a lot of money, and with that price tag comes a lot of pressure on him, agree he is a good player but that good??

Would rather go and spend 2-3mill abroad, and then leave the rest till christmas to see where we are, see what gaps need filling

    Excellent :D

Well worth it, we'll just have him taking shots at our keepers in training, it'll be a great boost to morale :D

Actually, someone on our board has as their tag line 'If I'm ever to sentenced to death by firing squad, it is my final wish that it's Aaron Mclean who does the shooting'. :emoticon-0120-doh:

That's brilliant :p Just seen you paid £1.2m for Matty Fryatt... the fact you paid more for McLean is quite an achievement!

We paid less for Matty Fryatt than he's worth and we paid more for Aaron Mclean then he's worth, but we make ourselves feel better by pretending Matty was £2m and Mclean was only £500k.

Isn't that still less than Fryatt is worth and more than McLean is worth though? :p

Just pretend it was £3m for Fryatt and you got £500k refunded for McLean, everyone's happy then

Trouble is clubs know we have the money because of the sale of Chamberlain........They want a cut of it. Sorry guys he is not worth £6m............No different to Maynard....he too is not worth the money they are asking.........Championship to championship players are not usually in that kind of bracket. Although with greedy clubs trying to get that kind of money it is likely that you are going to have to pay that kind of money in the not too distant future. The higher prices will work there way down the leagues too. I would be very surprised if NA were to break our outlay record while in a lower league.......He might match it but not over it. Just my opinion....more likely we will be looking to the continent for players.

I don't think it is just greed, though, it's what the player is worth to the club. Jay Rodriguez is not only a young prospect, a very good player and a local hero, but he's their only striker they can rely on injury wise. They have a thin looking and injury prone front line - not without talent, they have some very good strikers, but Paterson played just over 10 games last season and Austin, though only having half a season, only played 4, so to them, he is worth far more than £3.5m or whatever our idea of a "reasonable" figure is. And with Maynard, Bristol City just don't have anyone else like him. Look at their other attackers - Jon Stead, good for scoring goals but won't do anything else. Ryan Taylor, far from prolific and playing at a new level. David Clarkson, hardly setting the Championship alight. Marlon Jackson, ready to be a first teamer? I think not. Brett Pitman, okay he was good in his spell last season, but can he carry that on? Even so, Nicky Maynard offers so much more than the rest of them. They have creative forces with people like Albert Adomah and Martyn Woolford and Cole Skuse is an excellent player but losing Maynard loses so much to their attacking force. He probably is worth £4-5m in fairness to him but they'll want more because of how important to the team he is - a team who can't afford to bring in that many other players, another reason why they'll need a lot of money.

It's not a case of "ooh moneybags Southampton at the door, let's see how far down their pockets go" like many suspect, it's "please don't take our stars".
